Forestry Mulching Cost in Gautier, MS (2026)

Tracked forestry mulcher grinding young trees and brush into a layer of chips

Forestry mulching on the Mississippi Gulf Coast around Gautier is priced at $1,500 to $4,000 per acre. A dry, sandy lot in Gulf Park Estates with a few years of brush on it prices at the low end. A soggy back tract near Vancleave that Chinese tallow has held for a decade, under live oaks the owner means to keep, prices at the top. What follows is how a coastal quote travels from one to the other.

Gulf Coast Bands

Our Gautier pricing page listsPer acreOn a Jackson County lot, that usually means
Forestry Mulching$1,500 – $4,000Firm sand and young growth low; dense tallow on soft ground high
Tallow & Wet-Ground Clearing$1,500 – $2,500Cutting tallow and vine out from under pines and oaks that stay
Land Clearing$1,500 – $4,500A lot taken to a stated finish for a house or slab
Lot & Homesite Prep$1,500 – $4,500 per acre equivalentPad, drive and septic area in Ocean Springs, St. Martin or Escatawpa

Getting a tracked machine to a lot in Gulf Hills costs the same whether it works two hours or ten, so the practical floor sits close to $1,500 per project. A lot and a fence line done on the same trip stretch that floor further.

A mulching quote covers grinding brush and small trees where they stand, with stumps ground flush. Larger stump removal and cut-and-haul of sizable trees are quoted separately, and grading is not included. Storm cleanup of downed limbs is not a service we offer here; that is a debris hauler’s job. Each kind of job is described on the Gautier services page.

The Tallow Clock

Mississippi State University Extension describes Chinese tallow as a tree that tolerates fresh to salty waterlogged soil, spreads by water and birds, can bear seed within three years and drop up to 100,000 seeds a year, and sends up suckers from shallow roots. It also warns that mowing saplings turns one stem into several.

For a quote, the age of the stand matters more than its footprint. A few young trees at a lot edge fall in a single pass. An old field that tallow has held for ten years is a crowd of stems the head works through one at a time, often between trees you want left. And since the roots live on, a mulching price buys the knockdown, not the cure: regrowth needs treating afterwards by a licensed applicator, usually on a later visit. Our Chinese tallow removal guide for Gautier sets out that order.

Low Ground, Wet Seasons and the Coastal Zone

Much of Jackson County is low and slow to drain. After a wet week a tracked machine on saturated soil crawls and can leave ruts, and a one-day lot turns into two. Holding the start for a dry spell nearly always costs less than working through mud.

Some of that low ground is a permitting question too. Jackson, Harrison and Hancock counties form the Mississippi Coastal Zone, where the Department of Marine Resources is the point of contact for wetland permits, working with the Army Corps of Engineers. If part of a tract holds water most of the year, settle that before booking the machine; the answer can shrink the area being priced. Just north of I-10, the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge was set aside to protect wet pine savanna, a fair picture of how much of this coast is wet ground.

Live Oaks, Magnolias and the City Permit

The City of Gautier protects live oaks, magnolias and other significant trees, and its comprehensive fee schedule lists protected tree removal as a permit apart from site clearing. The site clearing permit itself is $25 under an acre, $50 from one to 4.9 acres and $100 from five acres up, each plus a $1 filing fee; mowing or bush hogging alone needs none. Working around a big oak’s canopy and roots is slower than driving straight through, and that time shows in the figure, so flag every keeper before the job is priced.

The city’s lot clearing guidelines also call for a written stormwater plan on any lot larger than an acre, and erosion measures on smaller ones. Outside city limits, Jackson County charges $25 for a land disturbance permit under an acre and $100 plus $5 an acre above that when the work is not tied to a building permit, and starting before a required permit costs five times the fee (Jackson County fee schedule). The Gautier and Jackson County permit guide walks through both.

Why a Burn Pile Rarely Works on the Coast

Mississippi does not allow land clearing debris to be burned within 500 yards of an occupied home unless a forced-draft system is used, nor during a High Fire Danger Alert, according to the MDEQ open burning fact sheet. On a coastal lot with houses on three sides, that usually rules a pile out. Mulching leaves the material spread across the ground instead, which also helps a sandy lot hold together through a downpour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an acre of mulching cost around Gautier?

$1,500 to $4,000: firm sandy ground with young growth at the low end, old tallow on soft ground at the high end. A lone acre usually lands near the project floor.

Is Chinese tallow more expensive to clear than ordinary brush?

An established stand is, because of the stem count and the care needed around oaks. It resprouts from the roots as well, so budget for treatment after the mulching.

Do I need a city permit to clear a lot in Gautier?

Land disturbance needs the city’s site clearing permit at any size, though mowing or bush hogging alone does not. Taking down a protected tree is a permit of its own.
