Forestry Mulching Cost in Gilberts, IL (2026)
Cut Brush Team · October 12, 2026 · 6 min read
Forestry mulching around Gilberts, Illinois costs $1,500 to $4,000 per acre, and buckthorn ground out from under oaks you keep runs $1,500 to $2,500 an acre. Jobs start at a minimum charge of about $1,500. On most wooded lots in the Fox Valley, one choice sets where your price lands: take out only the buckthorn and honeysuckle beneath the oaks, or take the wooded part of the lot down to the ground.
Two Scopes for One Wooded Lot
Picture the back of a lot in Campton Hills or out toward Barrington: oaks overhead, and under them buckthorn so thick the fence line has vanished. Two scopes fit ground like this.
Understory only. The mulcher works between the trunks and turns the buckthorn, honeysuckle and saplings into a chip layer. The canopy stays. That is the buckthorn and understory row on the Gilberts pricing page, $1,500 to $2,500 an acre. A stand old enough to carry wrist-thick stems moves up into the forestry mulching row, $1,500 to $4,000.
The whole lot. Everything comes down, usually because the space is wanted for lawn, a garage or a view. That is land clearing, $1,500 to $4,500 an acre: scattered young trees in an old pasture sit low, a mature wooded lot sits high.
The finish does not change between them. Brush, small trees and stumps are ground into mulch on site, stumps flush with the ground and nothing hauled away. Pulling stumps out below grade and cutting and hauling very large trees are talked through and priced in the quote. Grading is not part of our price; we clear to the ground so a builder can grade.
The Two Scopes Side by Side, in Dollars
Multiply your wooded acreage by each end of the band, then check it against the minimum. Where the band works out under about $1,500, the quote starts at the minimum charge; it is a minimum charge, never a fee stacked on the acre rate.
| Wooded area | Understory only ($1,500 – $2,500 / acre) | Whole lot cleared ($1,500 – $4,500 / acre) |
|---|---|---|
| Half an acre | $750 – $1,250, so the quote starts at the $1,500 minimum | $750 – $2,250, so from the $1,500 minimum up to $2,250 |
| One acre | $1,500 – $2,500 | $1,500 – $4,500 |
| Three acres | $4,500 – $7,500 | $4,500 – $13,500 |
On a half-acre backyard both scopes open at the same floor; the age and density of the stand separate them. The gap widens with the ground: on three acres the top of the full clearing band sits $6,000 above the top of the understory band, and even an old stand moved up to the forestry mulching row tops out at $4,000, below the $4,500 top of full clearing.
If a competing bid comes as an hourly rate, ask for its expected hours on your ground and turn that into a job total before comparing.
Why the Forest Preserve Keeps Its Oaks
The understory scope is not a half measure. In its commission minutes of 12 September 2023, the Kane County Forest Preserve District names common buckthorn and bush honeysuckle among the primary threats to biodiversity in the county’s forests. The two shrubs build a dense mid-story that shades the ground, and they grow well in shade where young oaks do not, so the woods stop renewing themselves. The District’s response is to contract the removal of non-native brush and small mesic trees from degraded oak woodland, so the oak woodland itself stays.
A private lot works the same way. Grinding out the buckthorn lets light back under oaks you already own; clearing to bare ground takes them with it, and no quote can put a mature oak back.
Plan the Return Visit From the Start
Either way, buckthorn sprouts again from the cut stumps. The District plans for it: mechanical removal first, chemical treatment of the sprouts in the next cycle, then prescribed fire to knock down what is left. The Illinois Extension invasive plant guide says grinding, mowing or bush hogging removes large plants and readies stumps and new growth for herbicide, and that control is never a one-time effort.
So a sound budget carries two lines:
- The first pass, priced per acre inside the bands above. This is where most of the money goes.
- A return trip for sprouts, lighter work than the original thicket, quoted on its own line so you can take it or leave it.
Treating the sprouts with herbicide is a licensed applicator’s work, hired separately. The Extension guide also warns that heavy equipment can rut soft ground, so wet low spots are best booked for late summer, fall or frozen ground. Our Illinois buckthorn removal guide lays out each visit in turn.
What Changes When the Whole Lot Comes Down
Full clearing adds more than a higher acre rate.
Stumps below grade. Ground headed for lawn or a building may need stumps out rather than flush, and that opens soil. In unincorporated Kane County, the Water Resources Division requires a stormwater permit for work that needs no building permit but disturbs more than 5,000 square feet, a little over a tenth of an acre, and for any project with floodplain; its erosion and sediment control rules apply even without a permit. Inside Gilberts or another village, Village Hall is the first call. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.
Far more brush. A cleared lot yields far more material than an understory cut. The Village of Gilberts lets residents burn landscape waste only on Sundays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Illinois EPA classes brush from clearing land for new development or a business as trade waste, burned only in an air curtain incinerator with permits. Hauling means a truck, labor and dump fees. A mulcher leaves the whole lot as chips where it grew, so none of those costs reach the quote.
Choosing Your Scope
- Keep the oaks if you want the woods back as woods. Budget the first pass in the understory band and a smaller sprout visit after it.
- Clear the lot if the ground has a new use planned. Budget the land clearing band, decide whether stumps must come out, and check the stormwater rule first.
- Do both. A lot can take the understory cut under the oak grove and a cleared patch for a shed or garden, priced together on one quote and one trip.
