What Cut Brush Does Around Sabattus

Land around Sabattus is a mix of hay fields going back to brush, woodlots with a barberry layer under the trees, and house and camp lots near the pond and its brooks. People hire our crew here for four kinds of work: forestry mulching, full land clearing, barberry and field edge clearing, and getting a lot ready for a house. The sections below explain what each leaves behind and when another method is the better buy, and the smaller jobs people name come last.

Forestry Mulching

The machine is a tracked carrier carrying a toothed rotor up front. Our operator drives into barberry, brush and saplings, and the rotor shreds them to chips that settle where the plants stood. Stems to roughly eight inches are taken standing; a bigger tree is cut down first and its crown shredded on the ground.

What you get is ground you can walk again, covered in a mat of chips that holds the soil when it rains, with each stump level and its roots left in place. On land draining to the pond, that cover counts. Shredding barberry where it grew also keeps its berries on the property.

It does not belong in the wooded buffer strip along the pond, where the town ordinance bars cutting the low growth or covering the forest floor, or on ground a builder needs bare. The roots of barberry survive it as well, so the sprouts are planned as a separate visit.

Land Clearing

For a full clearing job we start with the result: the trees you want kept, the edge where cutting should end, and whether the floor is left under chips or close to bare. Stumps are cut flush and covered by the mulch; full stump removal below grade, and cut-and-haul for very large trees, are discussed and priced in the quote. Grading is for your builder; our part ends at ground level.

It is the right job for a woodlot on its way to a building permit, an old field that has grown into young trees, and commercial ground around Lewiston or Auburn. One brushy wall line is a smaller job, and the field edge rate prices it for less.

Within 250 feet of Sabattus Pond, the Sabattus River or one of the brooks the ordinance names, the shoreland rules cap tree removal and cleared openings, and in some districts the Code Enforcement Office issues a permit first. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Barberry & Field Edge Clearing

Japanese barberry is easy to pick out once you know it. It is a dense, branching shrub up to about 6 feet, with a sharp spine at each leaf, small leaves, broad at the tip, that come out early in spring, red berries hanging below the stems and a bright yellow root. It grows in forests, forest edges and old fields.

The mulching head goes through the barberry layer and the brush caught up in it while our operator keeps clear of every ribboned trunk, and the field is pushed back out to its wall or fence. Afterward the woods are open enough to see into and walk through, the stones show again and a mower reaches the field edge.

Larger barberry can be cut but will resprout, so plan the return visit from the start; it is its own line on the quote, as is any licensed applicator's treatment. If big trees on the edge have to go as well, price the job as land clearing; knee-high soft growth is a job for a mower instead.

Lot & Homesite Preparation

Building in the woods near Sabattus means opening a footprint with some yard around it, a driveway in from the road, a cleared path for power, the well and the septic system, and a level spot where delivery trucks can stop. Near the pond, a brook or a wetland, the shoreland setbacks decide where much of that may go, so we mark them first, ribbon each tree you want saved and only then settle the house site.

Your build date decides the finish. A lot that waits out a winter keeps its soil under chips through the spring melt; one the builder starts on soon is taken down to soil. The grading, fill, foundation and pad come from other trades, and stump removal below grade, if your plan calls for it, is priced in the quote.

Jobs Landowners Name When They Call

From Lewiston and Auburn out to Bath and Augusta, ME, callers usually describe the land they want back, not the equipment. All of these jobs are done with the four methods above, with any herbicide left to a licensed applicator and any grading to your builder.

Fence Line Clearing

Barberry and brush tend to start along the wire and the stone walls between old hay fields. With the line cleared, you can find the fence, walk it and keep the mower right up against it.

Brush Hogging

A hay field that skipped a mowing or two is still tractor country, and when a rotary cutter will do, the quote says so. Woody stems and barberry are where the mulcher pays for itself.

Invasive Species Removal

Here it is mostly Japanese barberry, barred from sale in Maine since 2018. Our crew cuts and grinds it where it grows; a licensed applicator handles any herbicide.

Trail Cutting

Walking, snowshoe or ATV routes through a woodlot, laid out around wet pockets and kept clear of the pond and brook buffers.

Commercial Clearing

Sites and multi-lot parcels around Lewiston, Auburn or Augusta, ME, cleared to the limits shown on the approved plan, inside the erosion controls it requires.

Property Maintenance

Follow-up trips to knock barberry sprouts down while they are short. Miss two seasons and the thicket rebuilds, and the next visit is a clearing job again.

Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction

Thick barberry and tall brush crowding a lawn give ticks, mice and snakes somewhere to hide. Opening a wide band you can mow around the house, garden and swing set removes that shelter.

Defensible Space

Brush and saplings cut back from a house, camp or barn on the edge of the woods, so less fuel stands close to the building.

Selective View Clearing

A view opened over a back field or along a drive, with the trees that stay marked first. On pond frontage, the shoreland ordinance sets how much any view cut may take.

Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing

Plots and lanes opened in hunting ground while the surrounding cover stays put. Our part ends at cleared ground; tilling and planting are up to you.

Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation

Barberry and brush pushing in from the walls of a paddock, mulched back to the grass so no cut brush is left lying where horses graze.

HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing

A grown-over vacant lot in Lewiston, Brunswick, ME or Windham with a notice from the city or the association, or a sale coming up, taken back to its boundaries.

Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup

Brush and saplings cleared from a parcel ahead of a listing, so anyone walking it before it goes on the market can find the house spot, the road frontage and the corners.
