What Cut Brush Does Around La Crescent

Land around La Crescent is bluff woods and coulee woodlots with pasture and cropland between them, and on both sides of the river the understory fills with bush honeysuckle and buckthorn. Four methods do the work on that ground: mulching, complete clearing, taking the shrub layer out from under the trees, and preparing a wooded lot for a house. Each section below covers the bluff ground a method suits and where it is the wrong tool, then the jobs callers ask for by name.

Forestry Mulching

Picture a tracked machine with a steel-toothed drum on the front, walked by our crew into honeysuckle, buckthorn and young trees and grinding them where they stand. Bigger trees come down first, and the drum then works through the crown on the ground. Nothing is piled, burned or loaded onto a truck.

What you get is ground you can walk, covered in chips, with stumps cut flush. On a flat yard that is just tidy. On a bluff slope it is the point: the roots stay in the hillside and the chip layer takes the force out of a heavy rain.

It has limits. A builder who wants bare soil has the chips to deal with, the steepest bluff face is no place for the machine, and honeysuckle ground to the stump keeps a living root that sends up new shoots.

Land Clearing

Tell us how the parcel should look when we leave: which oaks and hickories stay, how far the opening should reach and how bare the ground needs to be. Those answers become the written scope. Stumps end flush beneath the chips; pulling them below grade, or cutting and hauling very large trees, is discussed and priced in the quote. We stop at the surface, and grading is for your builder.

Common reasons to choose it: a woodlot that will hold a new house, a field gone back to brush or a coulee hillside being returned to pasture. For one shrubby edge it is more than you need, and the understory rate covers that for less. Time on the job depends on stem size, the slope and the distance between patches.

In Minnesota the MPCA's stormwater permit applies once a project disturbs an acre or more, and Houston County Zoning & Planning handles county permits in the townships; in Wisconsin, the DNR's own one-acre storm water rule applies. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Honeysuckle & Understory Clearing

Tatarian, Morrow's, Bell's and Amur honeysuckle are Restricted Noxious Weeds in Minnesota: arching shrubs 5 to 20 feet tall that leaf out early in spring, shade out the plants beneath them and spread by birds carrying the berries. On the La Crescent bluffs they share the understory with buckthorn.

On a bluff woodlot the drum takes the shrub layer and the saplings and leaves every flagged oak and hickory where it stands. What remains is woods you can see through from the yard and walk on a chip floor, with the keepers' roots undisturbed.

Plan for what grows back. Honeysuckle reproduces from both sprouting and seeds, so the quote carries the return visits. Once the big trees are coming out as well, price it as land clearing; growth still under knee height is a mowing job.

Lot & Homesite Preparation

Building on a wooded lot near La Crescent means opening more than the house footprint. The yard, the drive in from the road, a cleared route for power, water or septic and a place for concrete and lumber trucks to stop all need room. Where a lot rises toward a bluff, the slope decides where the house can go as much as the trees do, so the layout is settled on the flattest ground first and the trees you are saving are flagged before any cutting.

Choose the finish by when the builder arrives. If the lot will wait a year, a chip layer protects the soil in the meantime; if the foundation crew is coming soon, we mulch it down to the dirt. Grading, fill, foundations and pads are outside our work, and taking stumps out below grade, when the plan calls for it, is priced in the quote as a separate item.

Your quote says what we leave behind: chips on the ground or bare soil, never a graded pad.

Jobs People Ask For by Name

On both sides of the river, callers usually ask for one of these jobs rather than a method. Each is done with the four methods above; sprout treatment is a licensed applicator's work, and grading falls to your builder.

Fence Line Clearing

Pasture fences in the coulees around Westby, Viroqua and Caledonia disappear under honeysuckle and saplings within a few seasons. Grinding the line back to the posts lets you see the wire again and decide whether to mend it.

Brush Hogging

A hay field or idle pasture with soft growth is tractor and rotary mower work, and the quote says so when mowing costs less. When the stems turn woody and pass the thickness of a thumb, the mulcher is the better tool.

Invasive Species Removal

Around La Crescent this is mostly bush honeysuckle and buckthorn, both Restricted Noxious Weeds in Minnesota. We grind them where they grow, so no fruiting brush travels on a trailer; sprout treatment, if you choose it, is a licensed applicator's work.

Trail Cutting

Hiking, ski or ATV trails through a bluff woodlot or along a ridge, laid out on the easiest grade up the slope and around the wet ground at the bottom.

Commercial Clearing

Business, farm and multi-lot sites in La Crescent, Onalaska or Winona cleared to the site plan and inside the stormwater permit the project already carries.

Property Maintenance

A planned visit after the main clearing. Honeysuckle sprouts from what was cut, and taking the regrowth down while it is knee high costs far less than clearing the thicket a second time.

Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction

Dense shrubs at the edge of a yard, a shed or a swing set give ticks and mice somewhere to hide. Mulching a wide margin down to mowable ground leaves them less of it.

Defensible Space

Brush and young trees cut back from a house or cabin set into the woods, so less fuel stands against the siding and the margin stays easy to mow.

Selective View Clearing

A window opened from a home on the bluff toward the Mississippi, or a safer sight line where a driveway meets the road, with every tree you want kept flagged first. Near the river, the shoreland rules set how much can go.

Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing

Plots and lanes on hunting land in the wooded coulees of Houston, Vernon and Trempealeau counties, placed so the cover you want stays up. We open the ground; tilling and planting are yours.

Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation

A paddock or hillside pasture whose edges have filled with honeysuckle and saplings, put back to grass, with everything cut ground in place instead of pushed into a brush pile.

HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing

An overgrown lot in La Crescent, Holmen or Onalaska that has drawn a letter from the association or the city, or that is about to be listed, cut back to its boundaries.

Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup

A wooded parcel cleared of brush before it goes on the market, so buyers can stand where the house would go, see the slope and find the property corners.
