Land Clearing Cost in Herculaneum, MO

Around Herculaneum, the price of an acre is mostly decided by two things you can see from the road: how steeply the ground falls away, and how much bush honeysuckle has filled in under the trees. Jobs here run $1,500 to $4,500 an acre, with small ones starting at a minimum charge of about $1,500. Add cedar on the rocky openings toward Hillsboro and the way a trailer reaches the work, and you have most of what separates a $1,500 acre from a $4,000 one. The ranges below are for budgeting.

Your quote is a single written price for the agreed finish, with any honeysuckle follow-up visit shown on a separate line you can accept or decline. Forestry mulching grinds brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site, leaves the stumps flush with the ground and hauls nothing away. Full stump removal below grade, and cutting and hauling very large trees, are discussed and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not part of our price: we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. Spraying, if you want it, is a licensed applicator's work.

Herculaneum Rates by Type of Work

Forestry Mulching

$1,500 – $4,000 / acre

The mulcher grinds standing brush and small trees in place. A few years of saplings on a gentle, open slope comes in near $1,500; a closed woodlot thick with honeysuckle and pole timber on a steep bank climbs toward $4,000.

Honeysuckle & Understory Clearing

$1,500 – $2,500 / acre

Bush honeysuckle, brush and saplings cut out from under the trees you keep, along a creek bank or across the back of a lot. Every keeper tree is flagged before the machine starts.

Land Clearing

$1,500 – $4,500 / acre

A whole lot, hillside pasture or cedar-filled opening taken to the finish named in your quote. Scattered young cedar in grass sits at the low end; a dense mix of hardwood and cedar taken down to bare soil sits at the high end. Stumps are left level with the soil; getting them out below grade is priced separately in the quote.

Lot & Homesite Prep

$1,500 – $4,500 / acre equivalent

The building spot, driveway and utility path cut out of a wooded lot, planned around the slope and the erosion control your permit calls for. Our work ends at the soil surface, and grading or a pad is for your builder.

Small jobs start at a minimum charge of about $1,500. Hauling the mulcher to one honeysuckle patch behind a house in Arnold costs the same as hauling it out for a full day of work. A job that small is billed at the minimum charge, with nothing added to it; larger jobs are priced by the acre inside the bands. Grouping every patch on your land into one visit gets the most from it.

What Moves a Herculaneum Quote

How steep the ground is

Herculaneum sits in the Missouri river hills, and few lots here are flat. A tracked mulcher works across a moderate slope at a steady pace; on a steep bank it climbs, backs and turns more, and each of those minutes is machine time. Where a slope is too steep to work safely, that ground is left out of the quote or handled another way, and we say so before work starts.

How thick the honeysuckle has grown

A few seasons of honeysuckle under open oak goes quickly. A stand left for fifteen years is a wall of multi-stem shrubs up to twenty feet tall, with saplings mixed in. Stem count matters more than the size of the lot, and the thickest understory is what pushes a wooded acre toward the top of its band.

Cedar on rocky openings

On the dolomite glades between Hillsboro, De Soto and Festus, cedar has filled many openings where fire no longer runs. Young cedar in grass is quick work; older trees with thick trunks take longer to grind, and shallow rocky soil means the head is run with care near the surface.

Reaching the work

If the trailer can unload right next to the work, the machine spends its time cutting. A narrow hillside lane, a creek to cross or patches scattered around a property each add time. How a truck and trailer get in is one of the first things we ask when we call.

What the permit asks for

Disturbing an acre or more brings in Missouri DNR coverage, and Herculaneum and Jefferson County each issue land disturbance permits that ask for erosion control installed at the start. Those rarely move the per-acre rate. They do shape how much ground goes in the quote and where silt fence or other controls have to sit.

Herculaneum Pricing Questions

Plan on $1,500 to $4,500 an acre for most work. Honeysuckle and brush cleared out from under trees you keep is priced in the $1,500 to $2,500 band; a steep, closed-in woodlot mulched to the ground lands toward the high end. Within its band, a given acre can come in high or low depending on the growth and the slope. The $1,500 minimum is where small jobs start, not the price of a typical acre.
Mulching grinds what is growing and leaves the stumps level under the chips, without turning the soil. Full clearing takes on larger trees and heavier stands, so the machine runs longer and the band reaches $4,500 an acre, against $4,000 for mulching. Grading is not in either price, and stumps out below grade are a separate quoted item. The Herculaneum forestry mulching cost guide walks through the mulching figure on hillside ground and how to compare an hourly bid.
Not by the acre. Honeysuckle under trees you are keeping prices in the $1,500 to $2,500 understory band; a wide old thicket with heavy stems moves into the forestry mulching band. What adds cost is that it resprouts, so the plan includes return visits. Our Jefferson County bush honeysuckle guide explains why each visit matters and what it costs.
Permits change the area, the timing and the erosion control more than the rate. Ask Herculaneum City Hall or Jefferson County Public Works in Hillsboro about your parcel before the quote. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination. The local ground and permit picture is on the Herculaneum land clearing page.
