Forestry Mulching Cost in La Crescent, MN (2026)
Cut Brush Team · October 16, 2026 · 5 min read
On a La Crescent lot that rises from the backyard onto the foot of a bluff, forestry mulching is priced at $1,500 to $4,000 an acre, and honeysuckle cleared from under trees you keep runs $1,500 to $2,500. What settles the bill on bluff ground is how many of your acres the machine can work, how slowly it works the tilted ones, and what is left out.
Every figure here covers one finish: brush, small trees and stumps ground into mulch on site, stumps flush with the ground and nothing hauled away. Full stump removal below grade, and cutting and hauling very large trees, are discussed and priced in the quote. Grading is not part of our price; we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. A job carries a minimum charge of about $1,500, the point where small jobs start, not an extra laid on top of the acre rate.
Why a Bluff Lot Is Priced in Pieces
The Houston County Bluffs have some of the greatest vertical relief in southern and central Minnesota, with steep north and south slopes, rock outcrops and bluffs exceeding 500 feet. On a lot that backs onto that ground, the house sits on the flat, the yard runs back to the trees, and the trees climb.
A per-acre rate assumes the machine can drive the acre. On a bluff lot that is true of some ground and not of the rest, so a fair quote splits the parcel into zones before it puts a number on any of them. Two lots of one size can be priced far apart: one mostly flat, the other mostly slope.
The Bench, the Slope and the Ground Left Out
Here is how the zones on a typical bluff lot sit in the bands on our La Crescent pricing page. Where an acre lands inside its band depends on the growth and the grade.
| Part of the lot | Band | What sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Yard edge or bench, honeysuckle under trees you keep | $1,500 to $2,500 an acre | Stem count and the number of keeper trees |
| Bench or ridge top, old thicket mulched to the ground | $1,500 to $4,000 an acre | Stem size and density |
| Lower slope the machine can work across | toward the top of $1,500 to $4,000 | Shorter passes, more turning, slower going |
| Bluff face too steep to work safely | not in the quote | Named in writing as left out |
The last row is the one to read twice. Ground the machine cannot work safely is drawn out of the quote and named, so you know before the job starts which part of the hill will still be standing in brush.
On the city’s Stoney Point bluff, forestry mowing is paired with hand-cutting for the ground and stems a machine does not reach. Our quotes cover the machine work, and they say where it stops.
Where the River Draws a Line
Some La Crescent lots sit close enough to the Mississippi or a tributary to fall inside Minnesota shoreland. There, intensive vegetation clearing in the shore and bluff impact zones and on steep slopes is prohibited, with limited trimming for a view from the house or an access path. Under these rules a bluff is a slope rising at least 25 feet above the ordinary high water level at an average grade of 30 percent or more.
That rule seldom changes what an acre costs. It changes how many acres are in the job. The city or county administers it through zoning and makes the call on your parcel, so ask before the quote is final. Across the river in La Crosse or Onalaska, Wisconsin’s rules apply instead.
Reading an Hourly Quote on Sloped Ground
If you receive an hourly or day-rate quote for a bluff lot, the risk on slopes sits with you: a mulcher on a grade spends more time turning, and each minute is billed, cutting or not.
To set an hourly quote beside a per-acre quote, ask for three numbers on paper: the hours expected, what each hour costs and what moving the machine to your lot adds. Multiply, add the move, and divide the total by the acres the quote covers. Then ask two questions: does that acreage include the slope, and what happens to the bill if the hours run long? A per-acre quote answers both: ground left out is named, and any overrun is ours.
Paying for the Sprouts
Honeysuckle and buckthorn are the shrubs filling most wooded lots here, and the lower Stoney Point bluff, once an orchard, has grown over with both. The first pass is never the last: after the mowing, the sprouts need work in spring and fall.
So budget for a return visit. Our quotes list each follow-up for sprouts on its own line, in the $1,500 to $2,500 understory band or at the minimum on a small lot, so you can see next year’s cost before you accept this year’s. Sprout treatment, if you want it, is a licensed applicator’s work. Our Minnesota bush honeysuckle removal guide sets out the visits and what Minnesota’s noxious weed rule means for cut brush.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many acres can a mulcher clear in a day?
There is no figure worth promising. Light brush on a level bench and a decades-old honeysuckle thicket on a slope are different days, which is why we price the acre and the finish rather than the hour.
Does clearing a bluff lot raise its value?
We cannot promise a sale price. What clearing does give you is ground you can see, walk and use, and a buyer can judge the lot for themselves.
Is the $1,500 minimum on top of the acre rate?
No. The minimum is where small jobs start: a job too small to reach it by the acre is billed at the minimum in place of an acre rate, never with a fee added, and once the acres price above it, the per-acre bands take over.
