What Cut Brush Does Around Lowell

Around Lowell, Indiana the land is mostly open field, ditch and new subdivision, and the brush collects on the edges: fence rows, field corners, ditch banks and the back of house lots. Left alone, those edges fill with buckthorn. Our crew does four kinds of work here, and this page explains each one, what it suits and what it does not: forestry mulching, full land clearing, fence row and buckthorn clearing, and preparing a lot for a new house. The smaller named jobs people ask for are listed after them.

Forestry Mulching

The machine runs on tracks and carries a toothed drum on the front that spins fast enough to shred standing wood. Our crew walks it into the brush, buckthorn and young trees, and they come out the back as chips. Trunks to about eight inches thick are ground standing; bigger trees are dropped first and their tops chewed up on the spot. There is no pile to burn and no load to truck out.

What remains is a layer of chips over ground you can walk and mow, with the stumps level with the surface and the roots left to hold the soil. On a ditch bank that is the point: the bank stays put. With nothing piled, there is no IDEM burn approval to seek and no buckthorn leaving the property.

Its limits: chips are in the way if a builder needs bare soil, and the head does not kill buckthorn roots, so a mulched fence row will refill unless the sprouts are knocked back again.

Land Clearing

Land clearing is priced from the end result you describe: the trees to keep, the line the cut stops at, and how open the ground should be. Stumps finish flush beneath the chips; taking them out below grade, or cutting and hauling very large trees, is a conversation we have and price in the quote. We stop at the ground, and grading belongs to your builder. A single property might combine a fence row cut back to the wire, a field corner reopened and a building spot mulched to the soil.

It fits a wooded corner that is about to become a house site, an idle field heading back into crops or pasture, and commercial ground around Crown Point, Merrillville or Valparaiso. For one brushy edge it is more than you need, and the fence row rate is lower. The time it takes turns on trunk size, soil moisture and the distance between work areas.

Once disturbance reaches an acre, IDEM's construction stormwater permit applies, and work within a regulated drain or its easement goes to the Lake County Drainage Board. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Fence Row & Buckthorn Clearing

Glossy buckthorn reached North America as an ornamental shrub for fence rows, and an Indiana invasive plant assessment group finds it mostly in the northern third of the state. Birds spread the fruit, so it collects along fence rows, ditch banks and field edges, mixed with honeysuckle and saplings, until the line becomes a solid wall of stems.

Running the line, the mulcher grinds the buckthorn, brush and young trees and works around every tree you have marked to keep. When it is done, the wire shows again, the mower reaches the edge and the ditch can be walked, with the bank and the good trees untouched.

Budget for what comes after. Cut buckthorn throws up new shoots and leaves seed waiting in the soil, so return visits for that summer and the one after are written into the quote. If the trees on the line are coming out as well, that is land clearing; if the growth is soft and knee high, mowing is cheaper.

Lot & Homesite Preparation

Preparing a homesite usually means opening four things: the footprint and yard, a driveway from the road, runs for power, water and septic or sewer, and a parking and staging area for deliveries. Here, wet low spots and any regulated drain easement shape the layout as much as the trees, so we mark them before the house location is settled, and flag the trees you are keeping so their roots go untouched.

Decide on the finish first. If construction is a year off, a lot left under chips holds the soil; if the builder is ready, everything is mulched down to the ground for them. We do not do grading, fill, foundations or build pads; if the plan calls for stumps out below grade, that is priced in the quote.

A mulched lot is not a foundation pad, and a bid that implies otherwise deserves a second look.

Jobs People Ask For by Name

People around Lowell often ask for the work by one of these names. Each uses one or more of the four methods above; herbicide is for a licensed applicator, and grading is for your builder.

Fence Line Clearing

The most common request on this ground. A fence row between two fields widens every year until it shades the crop or swallows the wire. Grinding it back to the posts gives you a line you can see, mow and mend.

Brush Hogging

Soft growth in an idle field or pasture is mower work, and if a tractor and rotary cutter will do the job for less, the quote tells you. Once the stems are thicker than your thumb, it is mulcher work.

Invasive Species Removal

In northern Indiana that often means glossy buckthorn, along with common buckthorn and bush honeysuckle; all three are on Indiana's Terrestrial Plant Rule list. We do the cutting and grinding; herbicide, if you want it, comes from a licensed applicator you hire.

Trail Cutting

Walking or ATV trails along field edges and through the wooded corners that remain, routed on the firmer, higher ground and around the low spots that hold water.

Commercial Clearing

Business and multi-lot sites in Crown Point, Merrillville or Valparaiso, planned around the site plan, any regulated drain easement and the stormwater permit the project already carries.

Property Maintenance

A scheduled trip back after the main clearing. Cut buckthorn resprouts from the stump and comes up again from seed, and trimming those sprouts while they are knee high is far cheaper than facing a full fence row again.

Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction

Tall brush crowding a house, garage or swing set is shelter for ticks and mice. A broad strip cut back to mowable ground around the yard removes it.

Defensible Space

Cutting back the thicket or tree line that has crept up to a home or outbuilding, leaving less dry fuel beside the siding and an edge you can keep mowed.

Selective View Clearing

Opening a sight line across a field, toward a pond or along a drive, with the trees you want kept flagged first.

Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing

Plots and lanes on hunting ground in Newton, Jasper and south Lake County, laid out so the bedding cover stays. We clear the ground; tilling and seeding are yours.

Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation

A paddock or small pasture whose fence has disappeared under buckthorn and brush, opened back up to grass, with the debris ground in place instead of left in a pile.

HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing

A lot in a growing subdivision in Cedar Lake, Winfield or St. John that has drawn a letter from the association or the town, or has a closing coming up, brought back to the property line.

Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup

Clearing the brush off a lot or a few acres before it goes on the market, so a buyer can walk the house site, see the road frontage and find where the fence rows actually run.
