Land Clearing Cost in Lowell, IN
South Lake County is farm fields and new subdivisions with very little woodland, so most clearing here is measured in lines rather than lots: a fence row that has grown into a hedge, the brushy edge of a field, a ditch bank, or a buckthorn thicket behind a house. What you pay depends on how long the growth has had, how far the machine travels along it, and whether the low ground can carry a machine in the week you book. The ranges below are for budgeting.
You get one written price for the finish we settle on, and each return visit for buckthorn sprouts appears as its own line, so you can take it or leave it. That price is for forestry mulching: brush, small trees and stumps ground into mulch on site, stumps flush with the ground and nothing hauled away. Pulling stumps out below grade, or cutting and hauling very large trees, is talked through and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not part of our price; we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. Any spraying is for a licensed applicator.

Lowell Rates by Type of Work
Forestry Mulching
$1,500 – $4,000 / acre
The mulcher grinds standing brush and small trees in place. A few seasons of saplings on dry ground comes in near $1,500; an old thicket with thick stems, or a wooded corner on soft sandy lowland, climbs toward $4,000.
Fence Row & Buckthorn Clearing
$1,500 – $2,500 / acre
Buckthorn, honeysuckle, brush and saplings cut out of a fence row, field edge or ditch bank, or from under the trees you keep. A long, narrow strip is counted by its acreage equivalent.
Land Clearing
$1,500 – $4,500 / acre
A whole lot or field corner opened to the finish named in your quote. An idle field with a scattering of young trees costs the least; a solid stand of trees cut and ground down to the soil costs the most. Stumps finish flush with the ground, and pulling them below grade is a quoted extra.
Lot & Homesite Prep
$1,500 – $4,500 / acre equivalent
Room for a house, a drive and the utility runs on a rural lot, planned around any regulated drain easement or wet corner before anything is cut. The price stops at the ground surface: your builder handles grading and the pad.
Each job has a minimum charge of about $1,500. Hauling the mulcher out for a single fence row in Cedar Lake or a backyard thicket in St. John costs as much as hauling it out for a full day. When a job is that small, the minimum is the entire price rather than an extra on top of the acre rate; bigger jobs are priced by the acre within the bands. Lining up every fence row and corner on the property for the same trip stretches it furthest.
What Moves a Lowell Quote
How wet the ground is in the week you book
The land around Lowell drains to the Kankakee River, and the sandy lowland soils here can hold water at or above the surface for part of the year. Soft footing slows the tracks and makes each pass drag. Dry late summer, fall and hard-frozen ground are when an acre here clears quickest, and a start date you can move a few weeks usually saves more than haggling would.
How long the fence row has been left
A fence row with a few seasons of saplings goes down in one quick pass. One left for twenty years is a hedge of buckthorn, honeysuckle and small trees, sometimes with old wire buried in it. Stem count and size decide most of the price, and wire found in the brush slows the head down.
Length against width
A quarter mile of fence row ten feet wide is well under an acre of ground, but the machine travels the whole length. Long, narrow work is priced by its acreage equivalent and by the travel, so a strip and a square of the same area rarely cost the same.
Ditches, easements and what the county allows
Work within a regulated drain or its 75-foot easement goes to the Lake County Drainage Board, and IDEM's construction stormwater permit applies once disturbance reaches an acre. Neither tends to move the per-acre figure much. What they do change is how much ground goes in the quote, when the work can happen and how near the bank the machine runs.
Reaching the work
Where a field lane or open edge lets the trailer park beside the job, nearly every hour goes into cutting. A tight gate, a fenced backyard, a soft crossing or several strips spread across a farm all add hours. When we call about the quote, we will ask how a truck and trailer get in.
