What Cut Brush Does Around North Adams

The ground around North Adams runs from limestone-till hay fields on the valley floor up to stony, wooded hillsides, and buckthorn is what fills both when they are left alone. Our work on it comes in four forms: forestry mulching, full land clearing, buckthorn and understory clearing, and opening a lot for a house. Each section below covers what the method does, the finish it leaves and where it is the wrong fit, followed by the smaller jobs people name when they call.

Rates are on the North Adams pricing page, and soils, wetlands and the mountain region rule on the North Adams land clearing page. A quote is free: ask for one here.

Forestry Mulching

The mulcher is a tracked machine with a toothed drum turning at the front. Our crew drives it into buckthorn, brush and young trees, and what it leaves is a mat of chips on the same ground. Stems up to roughly eight inches are ground standing; bigger trees are dropped first and their crowns ground where they land. There is no pile to burn and no load to truck away.

The finish is walkable ground under a chip layer that slows runoff, with stumps cut level and their roots still gripping the soil. On the Berkshire hill soils, with slopes up to 80 percent, keeping those roots in place is much of the point. Grinding buckthorn where it grew also keeps its berries from riding off the property.

Skip it where a builder needs bare mineral soil under a foundation. It also leaves buckthorn roots alive, which is why the sprouts get their own plan, and stone hidden in the leaf litter slows it.

Land Clearing

A land clearing quote starts from the picture you have of the finished parcel: the sugar maples and oaks that stay, how far the opening runs, and whether you want a chip-covered floor or one close to bare soil. Stumps are ground flush beneath the mulch; pulling them below grade, or felling and hauling very large trees, is discussed and priced in the quote. We finish at the surface, and the grading is your builder's.

It suits a wooded lot on its way to becoming a house site, a hay field that has turned to young woods, and commercial ground around Pittsfield or Troy, NY. One brushy hedgerow does not need it; the understory rate handles that for less. Trunk size, grade and stone set the hours.

Near a bank, a brook or a wetland, the conservation commission hears the plan first under the Wetlands Protection Act. On hilltop land in a Berkshire town that has accepted the mountain region law, clearing can need its review too. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Buckthorn & Understory Clearing

Two buckthorns grow here. Glossy buckthorn reaches 15 to 20 feet with smooth, untoothed leaves, and common buckthorn has small thorns at its branch tips. Both form dense thickets that shade out native shrubs and tree seedlings, which is how a woodland edge or an old field fills in.

Our operator takes the mulching head through the shrub layer and the brush knotted into it, keeping wide of each flagged trunk. Afterward the canopy has an open floor again, the hedgerow and the old wall show, and a mower can follow the line between field and woods.

Regrowth is part of the job from day one. Buckthorn sprouts back from the roots and root crown, so each return cut, and any licensed applicator's treatment, is a separate line on your quote. If the bigger trees on the edge are going too, it becomes land clearing; growth that is still soft and low costs less to mow.

Lot & Homesite Preparation

Building on a hillside lot here takes more than a house footprint. The drive has to climb from the road at a pitch a concrete truck can manage, power and septic need a cleared route, and deliveries need a flat spot to stop. On this ground the seeps, the steep pitches and the stone decide where each of those goes, so the lot gets walked and every tree you are keeping gets ribboned before anyone settles on the house site.

How soon the builder arrives sets the finish. If the lot will wait through a winter, a chip layer keeps the slope in place during spring runoff; if work starts within weeks, we take it down to the ground. We leave grading, fill, foundations and pads to others, and pulling stumps below grade, if the plan calls for it, is priced in the quote.

Jobs People Ask For by Name

In the Berkshires and over the Vermont and New York lines, most callers describe the result they want rather than the machine. Every job here is done with one or more of the methods above; herbicide stays with a licensed applicator and grading with your builder.

Fence Line Clearing

Hedgerows and wire fences between old fields are often the first places buckthorn closes in. A cleared strip along the line lets you see it, walk it and mow it again.

Brush Hogging

If a field has missed only a haying or two, a tractor and rotary cutter will handle it for less, and we will say so. When woody buckthorn has moved in, the mulcher is the better tool.

Invasive Species Removal

Here that means glossy and common buckthorn first, both on the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List and both recorded in Berkshire County. We cut and grind them on the property and leave any herbicide to a licensed applicator.

Trail Cutting

Paths for hiking, cross-country skiing or ATVs, cut through hillside woods on a line that traverses the grade and skirts the seeps and ledges.

Commercial Clearing

Commercial and multi-lot ground around Pittsfield, Greenfield or Troy, NY, opened to the clearing limits drawn on the site plan, with the project's erosion controls in place.

Property Maintenance

Return trips after the first clearing to cut buckthorn sprouts while they are knee high. Left two seasons, the ground fills in again and becomes a fresh clearing job.

Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction

Brush and tall growth pressed against a lawn give cover to ticks, mice and snakes. Opening a broad band you can mow around the house, garden and play area removes it.

Defensible Space

Growth pushed back from a house or barn that backs onto woods, leaving less dry material next to the building. Any local fire rule comes from your town and fire department.

Selective View Clearing

A view across the valley opened from a hillside lot, with each tree you want kept marked before work starts.

Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing

Clearings and shooting lanes in hunting woods, with the deer cover around them left alone. We stop at cleared ground; working and seeding the plot is up to you.

Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation

Buckthorn and brush that have spread into a paddock or hill pasture from its hedgerows, ground back to the grass with no piles for horses to find.

HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing

An overgrown empty lot in Pittsfield, Bennington, VT or North Greenbush, NY that has drawn a city or association letter, or is about to be sold, cleared to its lines.

Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup

A wooded or overgrown lot cleared before listing, so buyers can stand on the house site, see the frontage and follow the property lines.
