What Cut Brush Does Around Hattiesburg
Cut Brush clears land, and across the Pine Belt that comes down to four things owners pay for: grinding pine thicket and brush where it stands, opening a whole tract to an ending chosen in advance, cutting the understory out from under pines you want to keep, and turning a wooded parcel into a homesite. Below is what each method does on Piney Woods ground, what it is wrong for, and the shorter jobs that come off the same equipment.
Prices live on the Hattiesburg pricing guide and the local rules that shape a job are on the Hattiesburg land clearing page. Every figure follows a free walk-through, booked through our contact form.
Forestry Mulching
The machine is a tracked carrier with a spinning drum of carbide teeth on the front. It walks into pine thicket and brush and turns each stem into chips on the spot. Growth up to about eight inches through goes straight into the drum, and anything larger is dropped first so its top can be ground. No brush pile is built, and no truck is loaded.
The finish is a floor you can walk, stumps cut level with the ground and a mat of chips over them. It is not shaped and not build ready, which is the method working as intended. In the Piney Woods it suits the most common job there is: cutover or pasture that has grown back to pine, sweetgum and briar over ten or twenty years. It also settles the debris question, since a mulched tract leaves no pile to burn.
Two situations call for something else. If a builder expects bare soil ready for forms, mulching leaves a chip mat in the way. And where cogongrass has taken hold, the drum only takes off what is above ground, so those patches wait for treatment or come last, with the machine cleaned afterwards.
Land Clearing
Clearing a whole tract means agreeing on the finished state before any work begins. The written quote answers three questions: do the stumps get pulled or stay flush, does the wood get ground on site or trucked off, and does anyone shape the ground at the end. The methods inside that can vary across one property, from mulching the brushy edges to felling and grinding the big pines to stripping a building area back to soil for the dirt work.
It suits cutover being turned into house sites, old pasture brought back at scale and development parcels around Hattiesburg, Petal and Oak Grove. It is the wrong purchase for a single fence row, which is understory scope and costs less. On Piney Woods sand and clay the deciding factors are usually growth age, stump removal, disposal and how wet the low end of the tract is on the day.
Paperwork can come first. Inside the city the Land Development Code lists a Land Disturbance Permit at every size, and the state stormwater permit joins at one acre. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority decides.
Brush & Understory Clearing
This is everything below the canopy and along the margins: the hardwood sprouts, vine and brush that fill in beneath a pine stand, fence rows, pond banks, and the band where a mowed yard gives way to woods. The pines stay where they are.
Under pines is the Piney Woods version of this job. A stand left alone for a decade closes in until you cannot see thirty feet into it, and a bush hog bounces off stems a few inches through. Our equipment grinds them and works between the trunks. The ending is open, walkable ground with a chip layer and your standing timber untouched.
One pass clears what is standing, not what is in the soil. Hardwood sprouts from its stumps, so budget a second-year mowing pass, and cogongrass under the pines comes back from its rhizomes unless a treatment provider runs a herbicide program over two to three years. If the pines are coming out too, this is the wrong scope; if the growth is waist high and soft, a mower is cheaper.
Lot & Homesite Preparation
A house site on wooded land is really four openings priced together: the footprint and yard, a drive from the road, runs for power, water and a septic field, and a staging area for the builder. Before the machine starts, the trees you want to live with are marked and their root zones kept clear, since a big longleaf or oak beside the house is worth more than the time it takes to work around it.
The finish is named in the quote, either chip cover on a lot that will sit for a few months or open dirt ready for the next contractor. Shaping, pad work and pulling stumps are separate lines rather than assumptions. Inside Hattiesburg a building site brings the city Land Disturbance Permit into play, and the code asks for cleared ground to be stabilized within seven days. Outside the city in Forrest County, clearing under an acre still means a notification to the Planning Department.
A pad is a separate piece of earthwork, so if anyone has told you a mulched lot is ready to build on, ask them to put that in writing.
Jobs People Ask For By Name
Each of these is some mix of the four methods above, asked for by name across Forrest, Lamar, Jones, Perry, Covington and Marion counties.
Fence Line Clearing
Pine seedlings, sweetgum and vine climb a Piney Woods fence within a few seasons. Cutting the row back makes the wire reachable and gives the pasture its edge back.
Brush Hogging
Pasture and hay ground with a season or two of soft growth, where a tractor and mower is still the cheaper tool and we will say so.
Invasive Species Removal
Cogongrass is the one to plan around here, and killing it is a herbicide program over two to three years run by a treatment provider, not the clearing crew. Our part is clearing around it without moving it.
Trail Cutting
Walking paths, ATV lines and access tracks through pine woods, laid out along the higher ground so they stay usable after a wet spell.
Commercial Clearing
Business sites and multi-lot ground, staged around the city Land Disturbance Permit and, from one acre, the state stormwater permit and its pollution prevention plan.
Property Maintenance
A return pass on a schedule, because a long South Mississippi growing season closes an opened pine stand or field edge again within a few years.
Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction
Brush and litter banked against a house, shop or barn gives ticks, snakes and rodents cover. Pushing that margin back helps.
Defensible Space
Thinning the standing brush and small trees between pine woods and buildings, so the fuel near a structure is lower and easier to keep down.
Selective View Clearing
Opening a sight line from a porch to a pond or across a pasture, with the longleaf and oaks that frame it marked first.
Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing
Plots, lanes, camera corridors and stand access on hunting ground across Perry, Covington and Marion counties, with cover left standing where you want it.
Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation
Grown-in paddocks brought back to grazeable ground, stems cut flush and no pile to fence around. Old wire is found before a hoof finds it.
HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing
A cited or neglected lot cleared against a deadline, with the question of whether the city permit applies answered before work starts.
Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup
Pre-listing cleanup so a buyer walks the land and sees the acreage and the pines instead of guessing from the road.
Not Sure Which One You Need?
You do not need to know the method. Describe the land and the goal: where it is, roughly how many acres, when it was last cut, mowed or grazed, and what you want to do with it. The quote then picks the method, states the finish and gives a single price. Ranges for all four sit on the Hattiesburg pricing guide.
