Land Clearing Cost in Missoula, MT
Most clearing around Missoula is not about bare ground. Clearing costs $1,500 to $4,500 an acre in the Missoula valley, and very small jobs begin at a minimum charge near $1,500. Much of it is thinning: a wooded lot in Lolo or along the Bitterroot where young pine and brush have filled in under the big trees, and the owner wants the fuel out and the timber kept. That work is priced on its own band, below a full clear. Gravel in the valley soils, slope, and creek banks with buckthorn on them move a job within its band. A full clear, for pasture, a shop or a new house on acreage, uses the higher bands below, and the same factors apply.
The quote gives one written figure for the agreed finish, and any return trip for buckthorn shoots is a separate line you can take or leave. The figure covers forestry mulching: brush, small trees and stumps ground up on site, stumps left flush with the ground and nothing hauled away. Stump removal below grade, or felling and hauling very large trees, is discussed and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not part of our price; we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. Any herbicide in a plan is a licensed applicator's work.

Missoula Rates by Type of Work
Forestry Mulching
$1,500 – $4,000 / acre
Brush, crowded young pine and saplings ground to chips by one machine. Scattered growth on soft, level ground sits toward $1,500 an acre; a closed thicket of stems on cobbly gravel or a steep slope climbs toward $4,000.
Ladder Fuel & Understory Thinning
$1,500 – $2,500 / acre
Small trees, low limbs and brush taken out from beneath the timber you keep, or a buckthorn thicket cut along a creek. The trees that stay and the spacing between them are agreed and written down before work starts.
Land Clearing
$1,500 – $4,500 / acre
Opening a whole parcel to the finish your quote describes, such as timber taken back for pasture or a shop. Light, open growth prices low; a full stand brought down to the ground prices high. Stumps finish level with the surface, and taking them out below grade is a separate line.
Lot & Homesite Prep
$1,500 – $4,500 / acre equivalent
The house footprint, a drive and a utility path opened on wooded acreage, with keeper trees flagged first. Our part stops at the soil surface; the pad and the grading are your builder's.
A minimum charge of about $1,500 is where small jobs start. Hauling the mulcher out to thin a single ring of pine around a cabin near Clinton takes the same truck, trailer and setup as a full day, so a job that size is billed at the minimum, with nothing added to it; bigger jobs are priced by the acre inside the bands. Folding the driveway edges and the back corner into the same trip gets more from that minimum.
What Moves a Missoula Quote
How far from the house the work runs
A home ignition zone reaches up to 200 feet, with ladder fuels removed and trees spaced in the band from 30 to 100 feet out. Thinning the first hundred feet around a house is a smaller, lighter job than opening the whole lot. Deciding how far out to go, and which trees stay, sets the acreage before the rate is applied.
Gravel under the growth
Bigarm soils, found in the mountain valleys of western Montana, carry about 45 percent angular gravel of argillite and quartzite near the surface, and some ground holds cobbles and stones too. Rock grinds down mulching teeth and slows the head, so a gravelly parcel sits higher in its band than the same brush on clean soil.
Slope and stand density
Flat bottom ground near Frenchtown or Florence goes quickly. A timbered hillside above Lolo takes longer, because the machine works across the grade. A dense stand of young conifers takes more machine time than open brush. Any big tree you want felled and hauled off is discussed and priced in the quote.
Creek banks and wet margins
Where buckthorn or brush grows along a creek, the machine works from the top of the bank. A 310 permit may be needed for removing vegetation within 50 feet of a river or creek, so creekside work is planned around that question, which can change the method and the margin more than the rate.
Getting the machine in
A wide gate and a firm drive put the trailer beside the work. A narrow lane, a steep switchback or patches spread across a large property take time away from mulching. On the call about your quote, we ask how a truck and trailer reach the work.
