What Cut Brush Does Around Missoula

Wooded acreage with a house on it, river and creek bottoms, and open hay ground make up most of the land our crew works on around Missoula. Four methods carry the work: forestry mulching, full land clearing, ladder fuel and understory thinning, and opening a wooded lot for a new house. Below, each one is set out with what it suits and where it is the wrong choice, and the named jobs people call about come last.

Prices sit on the Missoula pricing page, and creek permits, burn rules and the county cost share on the Missoula land clearing page. Quotes are free: request yours here.

Forestry Mulching

The mulcher is a tracked machine carrying a spinning drum lined with steel teeth. It reaches into crowded young pine, brush and saplings and turns them into a layer of chips where they stood. Stems up to about eight inches go straight into the drum; anything bigger is felled first and its top ground on the spot. There is no slash pile, so nothing waits on a burn permit or a burn day.

What you are left with is open ground under the trees you kept, a chip layer that holds soil on a slope, and stumps cut flush with their roots still in the ground. On a wooded lot that is the finish a fuel thinning job usually wants: the ground cover broken up and the gap between the forest floor and the crowns opened.

Where it is the wrong tool: a builder who needs bare soil for a slab has to move the chips, and the drum leaves buckthorn roots alive, so the shoots that follow need a plan of their own.

Land Clearing

Full clearing is quoted against the finished picture: how much timber comes down, where the opening ends and which trees stand at its edge. Stumps are ground flush under the chips; pulling them below grade, or felling and hauling very large trees, is discussed and priced in the quote. Our work stops at the surface, and the grading is your builder's. A single property might combine a pasture taken back from encroaching pine, a thinned stand behind the house and a shop site mulched to the soil.

It fits a parcel being turned into pasture, a hay field that has grown up along its edges, or commercial ground at the edge of town. Where the aim is only to thin under timber you keep, the understory rate is the better fit. Stem size, slope and how much gravel sits in the soil decide the hours.

Clearing, grading or excavation that disturbs an acre or more falls under Montana DEQ's construction stormwater permit, and creek banks can need a 310 permit. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Ladder Fuel & Understory Thinning

Ladder fuels are anything that can carry a flame from the ground up into a tree's canopy, and in the band 30 to 100 feet from a house they come out and the vegetation is thinned. On most wooded lots around Lolo, Florence or Bonner that means small conifers, brush and low branches between the mature pines.

The operator works through the stand around each flagged tree, taking out the small stems and brush and leaving the spacing agreed in the quote. The same method clears a buckthorn thicket along a creek, with the machine kept to the top of the bank.

Small pine reseeds and buckthorn shoots back, so a return pass in a year or two is part of the plan, on its own line in the quote. If the mature trees are coming out as well, the job is land clearing; if the growth is only grass and weeds, a mower is cheaper.

Lot & Homesite Preparation

A new house on wooded acreage outside Missoula needs its footprint and yard opened, a drive in from the road, a corridor for power, water and septic, and room for delivery trucks to turn. Because the same lot will sit in its own home ignition zone, the trees left near the house matter as much as the ones taken, so we walk the site with you and flag every keeper before the first cut.

Fit the finish to the build schedule. A lot that will wait a season keeps its soil under chips; one the builder starts on soon is mulched down to the ground. Grading, fill, foundations and pads are outside our work, and stumps out below grade, if the plans need it, are priced in the quote.

Jobs People Ask For by Name

Owners around Missoula County tend to name the job, not the method. Each one below uses the methods above, with herbicide left to a licensed applicator and grading to your builder.

Fence Line Clearing

Brush and young trees that have crept along a pasture or property fence on a Bitterroot or Clark Fork acreage, cut back so the wire can be walked, checked and repaired.

Brush Hogging

A hay field or horse pasture that missed a season or two is mostly grass and weeds, and a tractor with a rotary cutter is the cheaper tool; the quote says so. Once saplings and woody shrubs take hold, the mulcher is the right machine.

Invasive Species Removal

Around Missoula that mostly means common buckthorn along creeks and river banks, a state Priority 2A noxious weed that shoots back after cutting. Our crew cuts and grinds; any herbicide is a licensed applicator's work, timed with ours.

Trail Cutting

A walking, riding or ATV trail opened through timber or brush on a wooded acreage, laid out along firm ground and kept back from creek banks.

Commercial Clearing

Commercial parcels on the edge of the valley cleared to the lines on an approved site plan, in step with the project's stormwater permit where an acre or more is disturbed.

Property Maintenance

A return visit a year or two after thinning, before the next wave of small pine and brush fills the gaps. Knee-high regrowth is a quick pass; a new thicket is a full job again.

Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction

Tall brush pressed against a house, shed or play area gives ticks and rodents cover. A band mulched back to ground you can mow leaves them less of it.

Defensible Space

Brush, small trees and low limbs cleared back from a home and outbuildings, so less fuel sits close to the walls. A free state home wildfire risk assessment is a good place to start the scope.

Selective View Clearing

A view opened toward the mountains, the river or down the drive, with every tree that stays flagged before the machine moves.

Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing

Openings and lanes cut through timber or brush on hunting ground, leaving the cover that holds game. Our part ends at cleared ground; tilling and seeding are yours.

Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation

Brush and saplings pushed back from the edges of a paddock or small pasture, ground into the surface so nothing is left in a pile for horses to find.

HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing

An empty lot in Lolo, Orchard Homes or Frenchtown with a notice from an association or a sale coming up, cut back to its lines.

Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup

A wooded acreage thinned and tidied before listing, so buyers can see the house site, the views and the boundary.
