What Cut Brush Does Around Albuquerque

The land around Albuquerque runs from irrigated valley lots along the ditches to juniper slopes in the East Mountains and drier lots on the mesa. Four things are what people pay us for here: forestry mulching, whole-parcel land clearing, Siberian elm and saltcedar clearing that spares your good trees, and getting a lot ready for a house. Below, each one gets a plain account of what the machine does and when another method would serve you better, followed by the everyday jobs that use them.

Rates are on the Albuquerque pricing guide, and the local permit and ground picture is on the Albuquerque land clearing page. Asking is free through our quote form.

Forestry Mulching

Around Albuquerque the word mulching gets used for bark in a garden bed, so to be clear about this one: our crew drives a tracked carrier with a toothed drum on the front into standing elm saplings, saltcedar, brush and small juniper, and the drum turns them into wood chips on the spot. Thin stems disappear in seconds. Bigger trunks come down first, then the drum works through the crown on the ground.

What remains is open, walkable ground under a layer of chips, stumps cut level with the soil, and the roots of the grass you want left alone. On a dry valley or mesa lot that layer keeps bare dirt from blowing. There is no slash pile either, which matters in Bernalillo County, where open burning is prohibited unless the Environmental Health Department permits it for a listed purpose.

It is the wrong choice for a builder who needs bare soil with no chips, and it does not kill elm or saltcedar roots: plan on stump treatment or a second cut of the sprouts.

Land Clearing

Full clearing is for a whole parcel, and it is priced against the end result you describe: the trees to keep, the edges of the cleared area and how bare the ground should be. Mulching grinds brush, small trees and stumps on site, stumps flush and nothing hauled away; full stump removal below grade and cut-and-haul for very large trees are discussed and priced in the quote. On a valley property that might mean the ditch edge mulched, a saltcedar stand taken to the ground and an opening for an arena or a barn.

It fits an irrigated parcel going back to pasture, a homesite on juniper acreage near Edgewood or Tijeras, and business sites in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho or Los Lunas. For one ditch bank or one fence line it is more than you need, and the elm and saltcedar row below costs less. Machine hours rise with growth density, wet valley clay, and slope or rock in the East Mountains.

In Bernalillo County, disturbing three-quarters of an acre or more of soil, clearing and grubbing included, needs a fugitive dust permit from the City of Albuquerque's Environmental Health Department; in the other counties, ask the county office. Disturbing an acre or more brings in EPA's construction stormwater permit. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Siberian Elm & Saltcedar Clearing

New Mexico lists Siberian elm and saltcedar as Class C noxious weeds, widespread in the state. Around Albuquerque they are the trees that fill ditch banks, fence lines and the back of irrigated lots: elm from the seed that blows in every spring, saltcedar in thickets along the wetter ground.

The mulching head takes out the elm volunteers, saplings and saltcedar while steering between the cottonwoods, fruit trees and shade trees you flag. Afterwards you can see the fence, walk the ditch and find the pasture again, with the trees you chose still standing.

Plan a second step. NMSU Extension says an elm grows back from the roots unless the crown is killed, so a stump treatment by your licensed applicator, and a look the following season, is what keeps the bank open. If the big trees should go too, that is land clearing; soft weeds are cheaper to mow.

Lot & Homesite Preparation

Building on a brushy lot means opening the footprint and yard, the driveway from the road, the routes for power, water and a septic field, and somewhere for delivery trucks to park. In the East Mountains, slope and the view of the Sandias weigh as heavily as the juniper; in the valley it is the ditch, the old cottonwoods and where irrigation water runs. Pick the trees to save before the footprint is staked, and settle the dust permit question with the county before the machine arrives.

Agree the end state up front. If construction is a year off, a chip-covered lot holds the ground; if the builder starts next month, the growth comes down to ground level instead.

Grading and build pads are not part of our price: we clear to the ground so your builder can grade.

Other Jobs the Same Machines Handle

Albuquerque-area owners often ask for the job by one of these names. Each uses the same machines and one of the four services above.

Fence Line Clearing

Fences along ditches in Corrales, Peralta and Los Chaves vanish under elm volunteers and saltcedar. Grinding the strip back uncovers the wire and posts so they can be repaired or moved.

Brush Hogging

Weeds and a season of soft growth on a pasture or mesa lot are a mowing job, not a mulching one, and the quote says so when a tractor and cutter is cheaper. Woody elm and saltcedar are another matter.

Invasive Species Removal

Here that means Siberian elm and saltcedar, with Russian olive and tree of heaven on the same state list. Our crew brings the trees down; a stump treatment by your licensed applicator keeps them from sprouting back.

Trail Cutting

Walking and riding paths through juniper on an East Mountain parcel, or along the back of a valley property to the ditch, laid out to follow the easier ground.

Commercial Clearing

Business and multi-lot sites in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho or Los Lunas, planned around the Bernalillo County dust permit where it applies and EPA construction stormwater coverage from one acre.

Property Maintenance

A planned return visit a season after the first pass. Elm sends up sprouts from the roots, and catching them small costs far less than clearing the ditch bank again.

Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction

Snakes and rodents use the cover of saltcedar or juniper pressed against a barn, coop or casita. A cleared ring around the buildings leaves them nowhere to sit.

Defensible Space

Thinning juniper and brush where it meets a house in Cedar Crest, Tijeras or Sandia Knolls, so less fuel sits against the walls. Mulching it means no pile to burn.

Selective View Clearing

Opening a sight line from a foothill or East Mountain homesite toward the Sandias or across the valley, with the trees you want kept flagged before the machine moves.

Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing

Openings and lanes cut through brush on hunting or recreation acreage, keeping the cover you want. We clear the ground; tilling and seeding are left to you.

Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation

Irrigated pastures in the North Valley, Bosque Farms and Los Lunas brought back from elm and saltcedar toward grass, with no brush pile to fence off.

HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing

An overgrown lot in Rio Rancho, Los Ranchos or Meadow Lake with a notice or a closing date, cleared to the line, with the dust permit question asked first.

Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup

A valley parcel or East Mountain lot opened up before it goes on the market, so a buyer walking it finds the house site, the ditch frontage and the mountain view instead of a thicket.
