What Cut Brush Does Around Ellsworth
Land around Ellsworth, Wisconsin is cropland and pasture broken by hardwood woodlots, ridges and steep coulees, and what takes it over is buckthorn and brush along the fences and under the oaks. Our crew brings four methods to that ground: forestry mulching, full land clearing, buckthorn and understory clearing, and opening a rural lot for a house. Each section says where the method fits and where it does not, and the jobs people name come after.
Prices are on the Ellsworth pricing page; slopes, permits and towns are on the Ellsworth land clearing page. Quotes cost nothing: request yours here.
Forestry Mulching
A forestry mulcher is a tracked machine carrying a toothed drum that turns at high speed. Our crew walks it into buckthorn, brush and young trees, and they come out the back as chips. Stems up to roughly eight inches thick are ground where they stand; a bigger tree is dropped first and the mulcher then works through its crown. Nothing is piled, burned or trucked away.
You are left with ground you can walk, a chip layer over it and stumps cut flush. On a ridge field that is simply tidy; on a coulee side it matters, because the roots stay in the slope and the chips break the force of a summer storm.
Its limits: a builder who wants bare dirt has the chips to deal with, some coulee ground is too steep to work safely, and grinding a buckthorn stem does not kill its root, so the sprouts need cutting again.
Land Clearing
Describe the tract as you want it to look when we drive away: which oaks stay, where the field should reach again and how open the ground needs to be. The quote is written to that. Stumps are ground flush under the chips; pulling them below grade, or cutting and hauling very large trees, is discussed and priced in the quote. Our work ends at the soil surface, and grading is your builder's.
It suits a woodlot becoming a building site, a field that has gone back to brush or a hillside being turned into pasture again. A single fence line is understory work, priced lower. The hours depend on stem size, the slope and how far apart the patches are.
Clearing counts toward Wisconsin's one-acre trigger for construction site storm water coverage, and Pierce County Land Management handles shoreland, floodplain and wetland permits. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.
Buckthorn & Understory Clearing
Common buckthorn is a Restricted invasive species everywhere in Wisconsin under NR 40. It is a shrub or small tree up to twenty to twenty-five feet, with twigs that often end in a stout thorn and black berries that birds carry off. It moves into oak woods, old fields and roadsides, and its shade stops young trees from coming up underneath.
Under the canopy, the mulcher removes the buckthorn, brush and saplings and steers around every tree you have flagged to keep. The woods open up afterward: you can see through them, walk them and mow the edge, and the good trees and the soil are left alone.
Budget for what comes back. Cut buckthorn readily resprouts from the stump, so return visits are written into the quote. If the larger trees go as well, the job is land clearing; soft growth below knee height is cheaper to mow.
Lot & Homesite Preparation
A house on rural land near Ellsworth needs its footprint and yard opened, a drive from the road, runs for power and a well and septic, and space for delivery trucks to turn. On ridge-and-coulee ground the fall of the land shapes the plan as much as the trees, so we look at where it is gentlest before the house spot is fixed, and every tree you are keeping is marked so the machine stays off its roots.
Fit the finish to the build date. Ground that will wait a season is best left under chips; ground the builder starts on next month is mulched right down for them. Grading, fill, foundations and pads are for your builder; if the plan calls for stumps out below grade, that goes in the quote as its own item.
A mulched lot and a finished building pad are different jobs, and a bid should say which it is.
Jobs People Ask For by Name
Around Pierce County people tend to name the job, not the method. Each one below is done with the methods above; stump treatment is a licensed applicator's work, and grading is your builder's.
Fence Line Clearing
On farms around Martell, Plum City and Elmwood, old fences vanish into buckthorn and saplings. Mulching the line back to the posts puts the wire where you can see it, mend it or replace it.
Brush Hogging
Tall grass and soft weeds on an idle field are tractor and rotary cutter work, and the quote says so when mowing is the cheaper way. Once the stems are woody and thicker than a thumb, the mulcher takes over.
Invasive Species Removal
Here that mostly means common buckthorn, a Restricted species under Wisconsin's NR 40 rule. We cut and grind it on site, so no berries ride out on a trailer; stump treatment, if you choose it, is a licensed applicator's work.
Trail Cutting
Walking, ski or ATV trails through a farm woodlot or along a ridge, routed on the gentlest line down a coulee and around the soft spots in the bottoms.
Commercial Clearing
Business, farm building and multi-lot sites around Ellsworth, Prescott or Baldwin, cleared to the site plan and to the storm water coverage the project already holds.
Property Maintenance
A scheduled return after the main clearing. Buckthorn sprouts from the cut stumps, so cutting the regrowth while it is still small costs much less than clearing the whole stand a second time.
Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction
Tall brush against a house, a machine shed or a play area gives ticks and rodents cover. A broad strip mulched down to mowable ground takes that cover away.
Defensible Space
Brush and young trees pushed back from a house, cabin or outbuilding on a wooded lot, so less fuel sits beside the walls and the margin is easy to keep mowed.
Selective View Clearing
A view opened from a ridge-top home across a coulee or toward the river, or a clear sight line at a driveway, with each tree you are keeping flagged first.
Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing
Plots and lanes on hunting ground in the wooded draws of Pierce and Pepin counties, laid out so the cover you want stays standing. We clear the ground; working it and seeding it are yours.
Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation
A paddock or hillside pasture whose edges have filled in with buckthorn and saplings, opened back to grass, with the cut material ground in place rather than left in a pile.
HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing
A grown-over lot in Hammond, Roberts or Prescott that the association or the village has written to you about, or that has a sale coming, cut back to its lines.
Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup
A few rural acres cleared of brush before listing, so a buyer can stand on the building site, see the lay of the land and walk the fence lines.
