What Cut Brush Does Around Madison, WV

Land around Madison comes in three pieces: the narrow hollow floor, the benches and old mine ground above it, and the wooded side slopes in between. Kudzu takes whatever is left open. Our crew is hired for forestry mulching, full land clearing, kudzu and understory clearing, and opening a lot for a house. Below, each method gets its strengths, its finish and the places it is the wrong tool, and then come the jobs people ask for by name.

Prices are on the Madison pricing page, and the terrain, permits and towns on the Madison land clearing page. A quote costs nothing: request one here.

Forestry Mulching

A forestry mulcher is a tracked carrier with a steel-toothed drum on its nose. Our crew walks it into kudzu, brush and young trees, and the drum chews them to chips on the spot, stems up to roughly eight inches standing. Anything heavier is felled first and its top ground where it lands. No burn pile is built and no load goes down the hollow road.

You are left with ground you can walk under a mat of chips, the stumps cut level and their roots still in the soil. On a hillside that matters: the roots and the mat keep the surface covered, where stump pulling would leave it bare. Kudzu ground this way loses its whole top growth in one pass.

Where it falls down: a foundation crew wanting bare mineral soil will have chips to push aside, the kudzu root crowns live on underneath (hence a separate plan for regrowth), and buried stone on rebuilt ground makes it slower.

Land Clearing

Land clearing is quoted from where you want the opening to end: how far up the slope, which trees stay, and whether you want a chip-covered floor or ground near bare soil. Stumps finish level with the ground under the chips; pulling them below grade, or felling and hauling very large trees, is discussed and priced in the quote. Grading the site afterward is a job for your builder.

Owners here choose it for a wooded hollow lot that will carry a house, a bench grown back to young timber, or commercial ground along the Kanawha Valley. For one kudzu bank it is more method than the job needs, and the understory rate is lower. The time on site follows stem size, slope and stone.

On a bottom lot in a mapped floodplain, grading, filling or excavating needs a local floodplain permit first, and disturbing an acre or more brings in WVDEP's construction stormwater permit. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Kudzu & Understory Clearing

Kudzu is the main reason people call for this work here. In southern West Virginia the vine occasionally covers five acres or more along stream banks, roadsides and forest openings, and it can grow a foot a day and overtop brush and trees. Kudzu is on record in Boone County itself.

The mulching head takes the vine mat, the brush tangled under it and unwanted saplings, and works around every trunk you have flagged to keep. When it is done the trees stand clear of the vines, the bank and the creek edge show again, and a mower can reach the bottom of the slope.

The vine comes back from its root crowns, so the return cuts, and any licensed applicator's treatment, are separate lines on the quote from the start. Once the bigger trees are part of the plan, quote it as land clearing instead, and a thin layer of vine over grass may be a mowing job.

Lot & Homesite Preparation

A house in a hollow has to share a strip of flat ground with everything else: the footprint and yard, a drive off the road, a cleared route for power, water and septic, and a spot where a delivery truck can turn. The creek, the floodplain line and the toe of the slope decide where each of those goes, so we walk the lot and ribbon the trees you are keeping before the house site is fixed.

When the house goes up decides how the lot is left. If the builder is a year out, chips stay on the ground to hold it through the rain; if the builder is waiting, we mulch it down to the soil. We do no grading, fill, foundations or pads, and below-grade stump removal, where the plan needs it, has its own price in the quote.

Jobs People Ask For by Name

Most calls from Logan to the Kanawha Valley start with a job name, not a method. All of these are done with the methods above; herbicide belongs to a licensed applicator and grading to your builder.

Fence Line Clearing

Wire along a hollow pasture or a property line up the hillside, with the kudzu and brush cut back so the line can be found, walked and kept.

Brush Hogging

Soft growth on a hayfield or a creek bottom mows faster and cheaper with a tractor and rotary cutter than with a mulcher, and the quote will say so. Kudzu that has buried saplings is past that point.

Invasive Species Removal

Here that means kudzu first, a West Virginia DNR Threat 1 plant, along with the autumn olive, multiflora rose and tree-of-heaven the same list ranks beside it. We cut and grind; any herbicide stays with a licensed applicator.

Trail Cutting

ATV paths, hunting trails and walking routes cut across a wooded slope on a line that holds the grade, with the turns placed where the ground allows.

Commercial Clearing

Commercial or multi-lot ground in the Kanawha Valley or along Corridor G, cleared to the limits on the site plan, with the stormwater permit and its controls in place first.

Property Maintenance

Return visits after the first clearing to cut kudzu and sprouts back while they are low. Skip a couple of seasons and a bank fills in again, and the work becomes a new clearing job.

Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction

Thick vines and brush at the edge of the lawn are where ticks wait and snakes and mice hide. We open a margin wide enough to keep mowed between the woods and where people spend time.

Defensible Space

Brush and young trees pushed back from a house or shed below a wooded hillside, so less dead material sits beside the building. Fire rules come from the state and your local fire department.

Selective View Clearing

A view down the hollow or across the valley opened from a hillside lot, with every tree you want kept flagged before the machine moves.

Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing

Openings on an old bench or a hunting tract, and lanes cut through the cover with the rest left standing. Disking and planting the plot afterward are for you.

Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation

A small pasture or paddock that the woods edge and the vines have been taking back, mulched down to grass again and left free of brush piles.

HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing

A grown-up empty lot in Charleston, St. Albans or Cross Lanes, cut back to its boundaries after a notice from the city or the association, or ahead of a sale.

Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup

A tract that has gone to brush opened up before it goes on the market, so people looking at it can find the building spot and see how far the land runs.
