What Moves a Quote Around Birmingham

Budgets built on the one-acre rule miss this entirely. Birmingham wants a soil erosion and sediment control permit from the city engineer before any non-exempt land-disturbing activity begins, and no acreage appears in that trigger; once a complete application lands, the code gives the engineer 14 days to accept or reject it. Unincorporated Jefferson County asks for a registered erosion and sedimentation control plan on the same pattern. Our rate does not move for any of it. Gradient, and how far down the rock sits

Cutting across a gentle slope, a mulcher runs close to its best rate. Past a certain grade the operator has to work up and down the hill instead, in short passes with constant repositioning, and an hour buys roughly half the ground. Thin soil puts stone in the cut as well, and teeth are a consumable. Valley-floor acreage and ridge acreage are two different products. A bid that charges the same for both was produced from a map rather than a site visit.

What becomes of the debris, in the month you want to work

April through October the pile is simply unavailable in Jefferson County, and even between November and March an authorization arrives with conditions attached. Two endings are left: reduced on site, or loaded and carried away. Grinding keeps everything on your property and deletes the haulage line from the quote. Haulage is the expense almost nobody has allowed for, and it explains most of the gap when two bids for identical acreage land thousands apart.

The number of seasons since anyone mowed

On pasture and field ground the calendar predicts better than the deed does. Three or four seasons of growth goes down about as fast as the machine can travel. Fifteen or twenty seasons puts stems the thickness of a wrist or a forearm in front of the head, and identical acreage lands near the ceiling of its band. Simply reaching the work

Gates, culverts, narrow switchbacks up a flank and limbs hanging low over the approach all consume hours before a stem is cut. Somewhere a trailer can reverse off a paved road is cheaper than somewhere that needs a staging area and a walk-in. Winter work, leaves down and ground firm, tends to buy a better result for the same spend, along with a far clearer view of what is standing there.
