Forestry Mulching Cost in Columbia Township, MI (2026)

Tracked forestry mulcher grinding young trees and brush into a layer of chips

Our forestry mulching rate around Columbia Township, MI is $1,500 to $4,000 an acre, with bush honeysuckle and brush along a fencerow or woodland edge at $1,500 to $2,500 an acre. Around Brooklyn and the township’s lakes, though, the ground to clear is often a lot tilting toward the water, and that prices differently from an open acre.

At those rates, brush, small trees and stumps are ground into mulch on site, stumps finish flush with the soil, and nothing is hauled away. Full stump removal below grade, and cutting and hauling very large trees, are discussed and priced in your quote. Grading is not part of our price: we clear to the ground so a builder can grade.

Why a Lake Lot Prices Differently From a Field

The Irish Hills are rolling hills and an array of kettle lakes, the hollows glacial ice left behind that later filled with water. Lots around those lakes inherit the hollow’s shape: the ground falls toward the shore, the bottom edge stays damp, and the road in is often a narrow shared drive.

None of that changes the published bands; it changes where an acre lands in them. A level field of scrub near Cambridge or Tecumseh sits near the bottom. The same growth on a lot dropping toward Clark Lake takes longer, because the machine works across the slope and around the trees you keep, so that acre sits higher.

Three questions place a lake lot in its band:

  • How steep is it? A moderate slope is slower but workable. Anything too steep to cross safely is excluded from the quote, and you are told before booking.
  • How thick is the growth? Scattered brush under mature trees is light. Years of honeysuckle and saplings under the canopy take more passes.
  • How does a trailer get there? A wide drive keeps the hours on clearing; a narrow private road or a route across a neighbor’s yard adds time.

Small Lots and the Minimum Charge

A lake lot can be well under an acre, and then size matters more than slope. Take a lot of one third of an acre. At $1,500 to $4,000 an acre, the mulching would come to roughly $500 to $1,333. That is below the minimum charge of about $1,500, where small jobs start, so the job is billed at that floor instead of by the acre, and nothing extra is stacked on it.

The reason is the trip: the mulcher arrives on a trailer with the same setup whether the job takes a morning or a day. Once the lot is booked, ask what else can go on the same visit:

  • the back of the lot, where honeysuckle has crept in from the woods;
  • a fencerow or the edge of the drive;
  • a neighbor’s overgrown lot on the same lake road, quoted as its own job.

Each addition is priced by its share of an acre within the bands. Every band, and the minimum, is on the Columbia Township pricing page.

Slope, Footing and the Shore Edge

A tracked mulcher spreads its weight, so it can work a hillside a wheeled tractor would slide on, but it still needs firm ground. Within 15 miles of the township, about a fifth of the land is wooded wetland, and on a lake lot the wet ground is usually the strip nearest the water.

That strip decides the calendar more than the price. Soft ground is worked when it is dry or frozen, never rutted in a wet week, so leave some room on the start date.

On a slope, the chips lie on top and the old roots keep hold of the soil, so nothing is dug out of the bank. Stumps that must come out below grade under a planned cottage or drive are a separate item, priced in the quote.

The 500-Foot Line and Who Issues the Permit

Michigan’s soil erosion law is the rule a lake lot meets first. A soil erosion permit is typically required for any project within 500 feet of a lake or stream, regardless of size, or for any project disturbing one acre or more, and some counties and municipalities are stricter. On a lake lot, much or all of the parcel usually sits inside that line.

In Jackson County, those permits come from the county’s SESC program at 120 West Michigan in Jackson. Pulling stumps or reshaping a slope is earth change, so ask that office before the work is scheduled. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Burning has its own rule: brush fires must stay more than 1,400 feet from an incorporated village such as Brooklyn. A mulched lot has no pile to burn.

Clearing a Seasonal Lot From a Distance

Close to one home in five in Columbia Township is seasonal, so many owners plan the work from elsewhere. Three steps keep the result matched to what you pictured:

  1. Flag what stays. Ribbon the trees you are keeping and mark the lot corners on your next visit.
  2. Settle the finish in writing. The quote states where clearing stops and whether the shore strip is included.
  3. Plan the sprouts. Bush honeysuckle sends up new shoots from cut stumps, so a return visit appears as its own line. Our Michigan bush honeysuckle removal guide covers how many visits a thicket needs.

How Do Hourly and Per-Acre Mulching Quotes Compare?

Multiply the hourly rate by the estimated hours, add mobilization and agreed extras, then divide the dollar total by the acres included. Ask how additional time is billed. A flat field edge goes faster than a dense, sloped lake lot, so compare quotes for the same area and finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you clear right down to the water?

As far as the footing is safe and the scope allows. The shore strip is often the softest ground on the lot, and earth change within 500 feet of a lake typically needs a soil erosion permit first.

Does a third-of-an-acre lot cost less than the minimum?

No. Small jobs start at the minimum charge of about $1,500; a lot that would price below it by the acre is billed at that floor instead, with no fee on top.

Why does my sloped lot cost more per acre than my neighbor’s field?

The rate bands are the same. A slope, a soft shore edge and a tight lake road slow the machine, so the same growth lands higher in its band.
