Land Clearing Cost in Columbia Township, MI
In the Irish Hills, the lay of the land sets the price as much as the brush on it. In Columbia Township, land clearing runs $1,500 to $4,500 an acre, and a small lake-lot or fencerow job carries a minimum charge of about $1,500. A level field edge near Cambridge or Tecumseh is steady work for a mulcher. A lake lot near Brooklyn that drops toward the shore, with honeysuckle grown up under its trees and a soft strip at the water, takes more time per acre. The ranges below are for setting a budget; your quote applies them to your own ground.
Your quote is one written figure for the finish we agree on, and a later honeysuckle sprout visit is listed separately so you can choose it on its own. Forestry mulching turns brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site; stumps finish flush with the ground and nothing is hauled away. Full stump removal below grade, and cutting and hauling very large trees, are discussed and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not part of our price; we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. Any herbicide in the plan is a licensed applicator's work.

Columbia Township Rates by Type of Work
Forestry Mulching
$1,500 – $4,000 / acre
Brush, honeysuckle and young trees ground into chips where they grow. An open old field on level ground sits near $1,500 an acre; a lake lot grown shut with saplings on a slope climbs toward $4,000.
Honeysuckle & Fencerow Clearing
$1,500 – $2,500 / acre
Bush honeysuckle and brush along a fencerow, a woodland edge or under trees you are keeping, cut back with the keepers flagged first. A fencerow counts by the share of an acre it covers.
Land Clearing
$1,500 – $4,500 / acre
A whole parcel opened to the finish written into your quote. Scrub on a former hayfield sits low; a wooded tract taken down to the soil sits at the top. Stumps finish flush, and pulling them below grade is quoted as a separate item.
Lot & Homesite Prep
$1,500 – $4,500 / acre equivalent
The house footprint, the drive in, a cleared route for power, well and septic, and turning room for trucks on a lake lot or farm parcel. Our part stops at the surface; grading and the pad belong to your builder.
Small jobs start at a minimum charge of about $1,500. A short fencerow in Raisin Township or one overgrown corner of a lot in Chelsea still means hauling the mulcher out and unloading it, so work that small is billed at the minimum rather than by the acre, and no fee is added to it. Bigger jobs are priced per acre within the bands, and a second patch or a neighbor's lot done on the same trip makes better use of the haul.
What Moves a Columbia Township Quote
Slope toward the water
Kettle lakes sit in hollows, so many lots here fall away toward the shore. A tracked machine works across a moderate slope steadily but more slowly than on flat ground, which moves the acre up its band. Ground too steep to work safely is left out of the quote, or handled another way, and you are told before the job is booked.
How thick the honeysuckle is
A fencerow with scattered shrubs is light work. A woodland edge where bush honeysuckle has closed in from the ground up, with saplings growing through it, takes more passes and more care around the trees you keep. Cut stumps resprout vigorously, so the plan carries a return visit, quoted as its own line.
Wet edges and the calendar
About a fifth of the land within 15 miles of the township is wooded wetland, and the low edge of a lake lot often stays damp. Those strips wait for firm or frozen ground rather than being rutted.
Distance from the lake or stream
Work within 500 feet of a lake or stream, or one acre or more of earth disturbance, typically needs a soil erosion permit from Jackson County's SESC program. Mulching rates do not change with it, but stump pulling or regrading near the shore may need the permit first, and that can move the start date.
Trailer access
A gate or drive wide enough for a truck and trailer, and somewhere to unload, keeps the hours on clearing. A narrow lake road, a lot reached only past the neighbors' cottages, or patches scattered across a farm all add time. We ask how a trailer reaches the work when we call about your quote.
