Greg did a fantastic job with our land that was overgrown with vines, brush and trees. It took about 1 1/2 days of constant work with the machine to get this 0.6 acres under control. Land Clearing & Forestry Mulching Across Columbia Township, Jackson County and the Irish Hills

Columbia Township, MI covers the southeast corner of Jackson County around the Village of Brooklyn, which sits about 15 miles southeast of the city of Jackson. This is the Irish Hills, rolling hills and an array of kettle lakes: hollows left by glacial ice that later filled with water. Clark Lake and Lake Columbia lie within the township, and Vineyard Lake sits just east of Brooklyn. Our crew clears land from Jackson, MI and Leoni and Blackman townships south to Cambridge, Tecumseh and Adrian in Lenawee County, and east to Chelsea, Saline and Pittsfield Township in Washtenaw County.

Lake lots and fencerows here usually call for forestry mulching first, which grinds brush, honeysuckle and young trees in place and leaves the chips as cover for the soil. The other three are land clearing, honeysuckle and fencerow clearing and lot and homesite prep.

On a lake lot, the slope and the distance to the water shape the work more than the acreage does. Request a free quote; we'll contact you to discuss your property, access and the clearing you need.

Sound Familiar?

  • A lake lot so overgrown the water is out of sight from the house
  • Bush honeysuckle filling a fencerow or the edge of the woods
  • A brush pile that sits too close to the village line to burn
  • A slope down to the shore that a tractor and brush hog cannot hold

Cut Brush Delivers

  • The lot opened up again, with the trees you keep flagged before work starts
  • The thicket mulched in place and its sprouts cut on a return visit
  • Everything ground on site, so nothing is left to burn
  • A tracked machine where the footing allows, and any unsafe slope left out of the quote

Why Irish Hills Landowners Choose Cut Brush

Within 15 miles of the township, about a fifth of the land is wooded wetland and another 15 percent is deciduous forest, set among crop fields, hay and pasture. Bush honeysuckle fills those edges, along with old fields and fencerows.

  • No pile to burn. EGLE allows brush and stumps to be burned only more than 1,400 feet from an incorporated village's boundary, which rules out a fire on ground near Brooklyn's village line. Mulched brush is never burned at all.
  • Suited to hills and soft edges. A tracked mulcher spreads its weight and works from firm ground. A slope too steep to work safely, or a shore edge that stays wet, is left out of the quote, and you hear that before work starts.
  • Rates published first. The Columbia Township pricing page sets out a per-acre band for each kind of work, and the quote lists the clearing and any return visit separately.
  • What the price covers. Forestry mulching grinds brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site, leaves stumps flush and hauls nothing away. Full stump removal below grade and cutting and hauling very large trees are discussed and priced in the quote; grading and build pads are not part of our price.

Weighing up a lake lot? The Columbia Township forestry mulching cost guide walks through slope, lot size and the 500-foot line, the Michigan bush honeysuckle removal guide covers the visits a thicket needs, and the Michigan land clearing cost guide takes in soils, permits and timing for the whole state.

What to Know Before Clearing Land Around Columbia Township

Lake lots and the 500-foot line. A soil erosion permit is typically required for any project within 500 feet of a lake or stream, whatever its size, or one acre or more of earth disturbance. In Jackson County those permits come from the county's SESC program at 120 West Michigan in Jackson. On a lot that runs down to the water, ask that office before stumps are pulled or ground is reshaped.

Rolling ground and wet low edges. Kettle lakes sit in hollows, so lots tilt toward the water and the low margins stay damp. That changes when the machine goes in: a soft shore edge is worked on firm or frozen ground, and a strip too steep or wet to work safely stays out of the job.

Burning near the village. State air rules keep fires of trees, brush and stumps more than 1,400 feet from an incorporated village's boundary, and in the southern Lower Peninsula burn permits come from the local fire department or local government. Brooklyn is an incorporated village in the middle of the township. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Columbia Township Land Clearing FAQ

It depends on the parcel and the work. Earth change within 500 feet of a lake or stream, or on one acre or more, typically needs a soil erosion permit, which Jackson County's SESC program issues. Burning brush needs a local permit, and Columbia Township may have rules of its own. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.
Most work runs $1,500 to $4,500 an acre. A fencerow or a light field edge sits low in that range; a wooded lot taken down to bare soil sits at the top. Small jobs start at a minimum charge of about $1,500, a floor for small work rather than a fee on top of the acre rate. The bands are on the Columbia Township pricing page, and the Columbia Township forestry mulching cost guide covers what a sloped lake lot costs to clear.
Not everywhere. EGLE keeps fires of trees, brush and stumps more than 1,400 feet from the boundary of an incorporated village, and Brooklyn is one. Mulched brush is ground where it stood, so there is no pile to burn or haul.
Yes. Amur honeysuckle is found in Jackson County. Our crew mulches the thicket; cut stumps resprout, so the plan includes return visits, and any stump treatment is a licensed applicator's work. The visits are planned out in our Michigan bush honeysuckle removal guide.

In Washtenaw County: Chelsea, Lodi, Scio, Saline, York Township, Webster and Pittsfield Township. Also Hillsdale, Albion in Calhoun County and Putnam in Livingston County.
