Forestry Mulching Cost in Huntington, IN (2026)
Cut Brush Team · October 12, 2026 · 6 min read
Forestry mulching around Huntington, Indiana costs $1,500 to $4,000 per acre. A fence row that filled in a few years ago, on firm ground, sits near the bottom. A thirty-year-old hedge of autumn olive with saplings grown up through it sits near the top. On Huntington County farm ground most jobs are not square acres at all. They are long strips, priced by converting length and width into acres, with a second visit for autumn olive regrowth.
Mulching Prices Per Acre Around Huntington
| Ground and growth | Typical range | Why it lands there |
|---|---|---|
| Fence row or field edge refilled with young shrubs, firm ground | $1,500 – $2,000 / acre | Small stems, one quick pass along the line |
| Woodlot understory taken out from under trees you keep | $1,500 – $2,500 / acre | Careful work between trunks |
| Old fence row or thicket of large autumn olive with saplings | $2,500 – $4,000 / acre | Big stems, slow feed, wire to work around |
| Full clearing to a stated finish | $1,500 – $4,500 / acre | A wider scope, set out under what the price includes |
The first three rows split two rows on the Huntington pricing guide by ground and growth, the $1,500 to $4,000 mulching row and the $1,500 to $2,500 fence row and field edge row; they are not separate prices. The last row is that page’s land clearing row.
Bringing a tracked mulcher to a short fence row near Andrews costs the same for a morning as for a full day, so $1,500 is the minimum charge for a project: a floor, not a fee added on top.
How a Fence Row Turns Into Acres
An acre is 43,560 square feet. A fence row is measured by its length times the width the machine actually clears, and then priced from the per-acre band like anything else.
- A 20-foot-wide row covers about one acre for every 2,180 feet. A quarter mile of it, 1,320 feet, is a little over half an acre.
- A 30-foot-wide row, where the shrubs have pushed well out into the field on both sides, covers an acre in about 1,450 feet.
- A full mile of 20-foot row is a little over 2.4 acres.
So a single quarter-mile row priced at $2,000 an acre would come to about $1,200 of machine work, which is below the project minimum, so that job starts at $1,500. A farm with a mile of grown-in fence rows between several fields is a different matter: at the same rate, about 2.4 acres comes to roughly $4,800. These examples apply the published rates and the project minimum; your own figure depends on width, age and what is in the row.
Width matters as much as length: an old row can spread well into both fields, and the width cleared back to the planting line is what sets the acreage.
What Slows a Mulcher in a Fence Row
There is no fixed number of acres a day; the growth and the ground set the pace. Young shrubs and saplings go through the head almost as fast as the machine can drive. Large, multi-stemmed autumn olive has to be fed in a little at a time, and buried wire slows the machine again.
That is how hours become a quote. If you receive an hourly quote from anyone, divide the expected job total by the acres before comparing it with a per-acre figure. A rate that looks cheap per hour can cost more per acre in an old, dense row.
The ground matters as well. USDA soil data puts more than half of Huntington County in two series, Blount and Pewamo. The Blount series is somewhat poorly drained, with a water table perched half a foot to two feet down in normal years, and Pewamo, in the low spots, is wetter still. Late summer to the first hard frost is when a row goes fastest.
What Autumn Olive Adds After the First Pass
Autumn olive is the shrub most likely to fill a Huntington County fence row, and it changes the budget because one pass does not end it. Indiana DNR reports it in every county of the state and says mowing or cutting it can cause vigorous resprouting, and that even repeated cutting is usually ineffective without treating the stumps or the resprouts with herbicide.
Plan the follow-up as one of two things:
- A treatment by a licensed applicator. Indiana DNR lists foliar treatment of the resprouts during the growing season after cutting, cut-stump treatment and basal bark treatment. That is a separate provider and a separate price; our crew does not apply herbicide.
- A return mulching pass a season or two later, before the regrowth thickens. Resprouts are small stems, so a return pass usually sits at the low end of the fence row band, and it can be grouped with other work to clear the project minimum.
On the worst rows, plan on both: mulch, then treat the resprouts, then check the row the following season. Our autumn olive removal guide sets out the whole plan.
What the Price Includes
Forestry mulching grinds brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site. Stumps are left flush with the ground, the chips stay where they fall, and nothing is hauled away. Full stump removal below grade and cut-and-haul for very large trees are discussed and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not part of our price: we clear to the ground so a builder can grade.
Leaving the brush in place also keeps you inside Indiana’s Terrestrial Plant Rule, which makes it illegal to transport autumn olive and Amur honeysuckle. For the statewide picture, including central and southern Indiana, see our Indiana forestry mulching cost guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does one acre of mulching cost near Huntington?
Between $1,500 and $4,000. Young regrowth on firm ground is the low end; an old, dense row of large autumn olive is the high end. The $1,500 minimum is the floor for jobs smaller than an acre.
How long does it take to mulch one acre?
There is no fixed figure: stem size, buried wire and how wet the ground is set the pace. Our quote is per job, so a slow row costs you nothing extra.
Is the fence wire saved?
Your call, made before work starts. Keeping the wire is slower; if the fence is coming out anyway, the row goes faster.
