Land Clearing Cost in Huntington, IN

On Huntington County farm ground, clearing is rarely a whole field. It is a fence row that has grown into a hedge, a field edge where autumn olive has crept toward the corn, a ditch bank or the shrub layer under a farm woodlot. Those jobs are long and narrow, so they are measured by the acreage the strip adds up to and priced from the same four rows as everything else below. A wooded lot being opened for a house, near Roanoke or Columbia City, is priced the ordinary way.

Your quote comes back as a single figure on paper, with the method and the finish beside it. Forestry mulching grinds brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site, with stumps flush with the ground and nothing hauled away. Full stump removal below grade and cut-and-haul for very large trees are discussed and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not part of our price: we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. Herbicide on autumn olive stumps or resprouts is a licensed applicator's work and price, not ours.

Huntington Rates by Type of Work

Forestry Mulching

$1,500 – $4,000 / acre

Brush, saplings and autumn olive ground to mulch where they stand, with stumps flush and the chips left on site. A field corner of young growth on firm ground prices low; an old thicket of large shrubs with trees mixed in prices high.

Fence Row & Field Edge Clearing

$1,500 – $2,500 / acre

A grown-in fence row or field edge cut back to the wire and the planting line, or the shrub layer taken out from under a farm woodlot, with the trees you keep left standing. A long, narrow strip is priced by the acreage it adds up to.

Land Clearing

$1,500 – $4,500 / acre

A whole parcel taken to the finish written into the quote. An idle pasture with scattered brush lands near the bottom; a woodlot of mature trees taken down to ground level lands near the top. Full stump removal below grade, or cut-and-haul for very large trees, is discussed and priced in the quote.

Lot & Homesite Prep

$1,500 – $4,500 / acre equivalent

A house footprint, lane and utility path opened on a wooded lot or a split-off acreage. We clear to the ground so your builder can grade; grading and the pad are not part of this price.

An acre can land anywhere in its row, depending on what is growing. $1,500 is the minimum charge for a project, not a fee added on top: bringing a tracked mulcher to a short fence row near Andrews costs the same for two hours as for eight, so a small job is billed at the minimum. Putting every fence row and field edge on the farm into one visit, or joining a neighbour across the fence, gets more from it.

Five Factors Behind a Huntington Price

Strip or block

Most of the work around Huntington comes as a strip: a fence row between two fields, a field edge, the bank of a ditch. A quarter mile of fence row 20 feet wide is a little over half an acre, so the strip is measured and priced by the acreage it adds up to. A solid block of brush, like an idle pasture corner, is measured the ordinary way.

How old the growth is

A fence row that was cleared ten years ago and has filled back in with young shrubs goes quickly. One that has been left for thirty years, with autumn olive grown into small trees and saplings coming up through it, takes several times as long per foot. Age and stem size are the largest swing in a Huntington quote.

Wet ground and the season

Most of Huntington County is slow-draining till soil, with a water table close to the surface through winter and spring. A low field edge or woodlot floor is easier and cheaper to work from late summer to the first hard frost. Booking in that window is one of the simplest ways to keep a price down.

Wire, crop and trees you keep

Old wire buried in a fence row, a standing crop on one side, or shade trees you want left all slow the machine, because it has to work carefully along them. Point them out when you request a quote. Leaving the bigger trees is often cheaper than grinding them.

Drains, permits and the brush

Work along a county regulated drain answers to the County Surveyor and the Drainage Board, and disturbing an acre or more of soil brings in the state stormwater permit. Neither changes our rate, though either can move a start date. Mulching leaves no pile, so there is nothing to haul under Indiana's Terrestrial Plant Rule and nothing to burn.

Huntington Pricing Questions

Plan on $1,500 to $4,500 an acre for most work. Young growth on firm ground is the lower part of that range; a woodlot of mature trees taken down to ground level is the upper part. Request a free quote and we'll contact you to discuss your property; our crew then puts one figure in writing.
By its length times its width. A fence row 20 feet wide covers about one acre for every 2,180 feet of length, so a quarter mile of it is a little over half an acre. Short rows land at the $1,500 project minimum; long ones are figured from the $1,500 to $2,500 row. The Huntington forestry mulching cost guide works through examples.
Per acre it sits in the same rows as other brush; an old, dense thicket moves toward the top of the mulching band. What adds cost is the follow-up, outside our price: Indiana DNR warns that cutting can cause vigorous resprouting, so plan a treatment of the stumps or resprouts by your licensed applicator and a check the next season. Our autumn olive removal guide sets out the plan.
Mulching is one machine making one pass, with stumps left flush under a chip layer and the ground left as it lies. Full clearing takes down denser stands and larger trees to a stated finish, which can include stump removal below grade or cut-and-haul for very large trees, discussed and priced in the quote. The extra machine hours are why clearing reaches $4,500 an acre and mulching stops at $4,000. Which of the two your price covers is written on the quote.
