Forestry mulcher grinding brush and small trees into a mat of chips

Forestry mulching around Jackson, Mississippi runs $1,500 to $4,000 per acre. A pasture let go for a few seasons sits at the floor. A creek bottom or back lot that has been a privet thicket for fifteen years sits at the ceiling. What moves a Central Mississippi number is the age and density of the growth, how wet the clay is when the machine arrives, and what the state’s burn rules let you do with the debris.

What Does Forestry Mulching Cost Per Acre Near Jackson?

What we find on siteRangeWhat drives it there
Soft growth and young pine on idle pasture$1,500 – $2,000 / acreA single open pass
Privet and understory beneath trees you keep$2,000 – $3,000 / acreSteering around keepers, dense stems
Old pasture, cutover or bottomland gone to thicket$3,000 – $4,000 / acreStem size, repeat passes, tooth wear
Whole-tract clearing to a named ending$1,500 – $4,500 / acreA different scope, covered further down

Below roughly two acres the figure stops tracking acreage. Loading a tracked machine and getting it out to Utica or Mendenhall costs the same whether the head runs one hour or all day, which is why there is a working minimum around $1,500 per project. Treat each band as a budgeting figure; the site visit that turns it into a written number costs nothing.

Privet Is What Usually Sets the Hours

Mississippi State University Extension lists Chinese privet as a state invasive and describes it forming dense thickets in bottomland forests, along fencerows and where open ground meets woods (MSU Extension, Chinese privet).

Privet grows in multi-stemmed walls, so the head works a lot of wood per foot of travel. Three or four seasons of it goes down quickly. Ten or fifteen seasons, with pine and hardwood seeded in among it, puts the same acreage near the top of its band. The most useful thing you can tell us on the phone is roughly when the land was last grazed, cut or kept.

The same Extension publication notes that cut privet stumps need an appropriate herbicide to prevent regrowth. Mulching removes the thicket; it does not kill the roots. Stump and regrowth treatment is work for a treatment provider rather than the clearing crew, and it is a separate line from the mulching price.

Wet Clay Changes the Calendar

Much of Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties sits on the Yazoo Clay. The Mississippi Office of Geology describes it as an expansive clay that swells when saturated and shrinks as it dries, with cracks that can reach an inch or two wide at the surface (MDEQ Office of Geology, Yazoo Clay circular).

For a mulching job the practical effect is timing. After a long rain, heavy clay is slick and soft, a tracked machine slows, and ruts are easier to leave than to repair. The rate per acre does not change with the weather, but the hours can, and a job that has to go the week after a wet spell may land higher in its band than the same job booked into a dry stretch. Our Yazoo clay and land clearing guide covers the ground in more detail, including the question of big trees near a house.

The Burn Buffer Is a Line Item

Mississippi’s open burning rules say land clearing debris may not be burned within 500 yards of an occupied dwelling unless a forced-draft system such as an air curtain burner is used, and even then not within 50 yards. Burning is also off where a local ordinance prohibits it, and during a High Fire Danger Alert (MDEQ open burning fact sheet). Those rules are current as of September 2026.

Anywhere in the built-up metro, from Clinton to Flowood, a tract is likely to sit closer than that to someone’s home, and then the open pile is off the table. That leaves two endings: grind the material where it stands, or load it and haul it. Haulage is the cost people most often leave out, and it is why grinding wins so many quotes here on arithmetic rather than preference.

Are You Buying Mulching or Clearing?

Forestry mulching reduces standing brush and small trees where they grow. Stumps stay, cut at ground level, the chips remain on the surface, and nothing is shaped or build ready.

Land clearing is a whole-tract scope whose ending has to be spelled out: stumps out or left, debris hauled or kept, pad shaped or not. At $1,500 to $4,500 per acre, it is what a parcel bound for a house, a drive or a utility run actually needs.

Grinding is usually cheaper because it deletes the loading and the hauling. It stays cheaper only if it delivers the ending you need, so ask every bidder to state in writing which of the two they have quoted. Permits sit outside both: in unincorporated Hinds County the clearing permit is $100 for the first two acres and $5 for each additional acre (Hinds County clearing permit requirements).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to mulch one acre near Jackson?

Allow $1,500 to $4,000 for a single acre, soft growth at the bottom and an old privet thicket at the top. One acre on its own usually lands near the project minimum, since getting the machine there costs the same at any size.

Is mulching cheaper than having the brush hauled away?

Almost always. Cut, pile, load and haul is four operations; grinding is one, and nothing leaves the property. With the 500-yard burn buffer ruling out most piles, the gap is wider still.

Will the privet come back after mulching?

Yes, unless the stumps and regrowth are treated. Extension advises herbicide on cut privet stumps, and a treatment provider handles that. A follow-up mowing pass a year later costs a fraction of clearing a regrown thicket twice.

Do I need a permit before mulching near Jackson?

Often. The City of Jackson requires permits for clearing, and Hinds County issues its own clearing permit outside the city. Our Jackson and Hinds County permit guide walks through each one.
