Land Clearing Cost in Palmer, MA
Around Palmer the land splits two ways. Down by the Quaboag, Ware and Swift, it is open valley ground, often an old hay field or pasture with shrubs such as autumn olive creeping in from the edges. Up in the hills toward Monson, Brimfield and Warren, it is mostly stony woodland. What you pay depends on which of the two you own, how much of it should stay standing, and whether the ground is dry in the week you book. The ranges below are for budgeting.
A Palmer quote is written as a single figure for the agreed finish, and any return cuts for autumn olive sprouts appear as their own lines, so you can take them or leave them. Forestry mulching grinds brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site, stumps flush with the ground and nothing hauled away. Full stump removal below grade, and felling and hauling very large trees, are discussed and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not part of our price; we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. Any spraying is a licensed applicator's job.

Palmer Rates by Type of Work
Forestry Mulching
$1,500 – $4,000 / acre
Standing brush and small trees ground to mulch where they grow. Young growth on a dry, open field edge prices low; a closed oak and pine stand on stony till, with large stems to work around, prices high.
Autumn Olive & Understory Clearing
$1,500 – $2,500 / acre
Autumn olive, bittersweet, brush and saplings cut out of field margins and from under the oak, maple and white pine you keep. A stone wall line or pasture edge counted by its acreage equivalent usually falls in this row.
Land Clearing
$1,500 – $4,500 / acre
A whole parcel taken to the finish written into the quote. Scattered shrubs in a field land near the bottom; a closed woodlot felled and mulched to ground level lands near the top. Stumps are ground flush; removal below grade is priced in the quote.
Lot & Homesite Prep
$1,500 – $4,500 / acre equivalent
A house footprint, drive and utility path opened in a wooded lot, laid out around any riverfront area or wetland buffer first. We clear to the ground so your builder can grade; build pads and grading are not part of this price.
Each job has a minimum charge of about $1,500. Hauling the mulcher to a small Wilbraham backyard or one Monson fence line costs as much as hauling it to a full day's work. For a small job that minimum is the entire bill, not an extra fee on top of the acre rate, and bigger jobs are priced by the acre within the bands. Bundle a few small patches into one visit to get the most from it.
Five Factors Behind a Palmer Price
Stone under the leaves
NRCS notes that on the glacial till uplands, the fields are the areas cleared of stones and the stony ground is mostly wooded. So a wooded lot in the hills around Palmer usually means rock underfoot, and the mulching head has to ride higher and slower over it. Valley ground near the rivers is often stone free and goes faster.
How long the autumn olive has had
A few young shrubs along a fence go down in one pass. A pasture that has been left for years can be a solid wall of multi-stemmed shrubs up to 20 feet tall and 30 across. The mulching price covers knocking it down; the return cuts for sprouts are listed as their own visits so you can see them.
Distance to the river
Within 200 feet of the Quaboag, Ware, Swift or Chicopee, or near a wetland, the Conservation Commission may need a filing before work starts. That rarely changes the rate per acre, but it can shrink the area in the quote, set conditions on how the work is done, or move the start date.
The month you book
Flood plain ground can stay soft after spring runoff, and a tracked machine on wet silt ruts it and slows down. Dry summer and fall ground, or frozen ground in winter, is when the same acre goes fastest, so a flexible start date is often worth more than any discount.
Getting the machine to the work
A farm lane or a hay field gate lets the trailer drop the machine near the work, so the hours go into cutting. A tight gap in a stone wall, a brook to cross or a long track through the woods adds time. We talk through the route in when we call you about the quote.
