Greg did a fantastic job with our land that was overgrown with vines, brush and trees. It took about 1 1/2 days of constant work with the machine to get this 0.6 acres under control. Greg was here at 8am sharp, just as promised. Very professional and reliable. 100% satisfied customer! I highly recommend Cut Brush for land clearing.

Land Clearing & Forestry Mulching Across Northern New Mexico

Up on the mesas, in Los Alamos and White Rock, lots are small and many end at a canyon rim. Down the hill, in Española, El Rancho and Chimayo and across the Santa Fe County communities from Las Campanas and Tano Road to Agua Fria and La Cienega, parcels are larger, and the piñon and juniper on them often stand closer to the house than the owner would like.

Our crew works that ground with forestry mulching: a tracked machine grinds the crowded trees, brush and saplings into chips where they stand, so a thinning leaves nothing to stack, haul or burn. We also offer land clearing, piñon-juniper and understory thinning, plus lot and homesite prep where a new house is going in.

Along the drainages, windbreaks and lot edges the other job is Russian olive, a thorny tree with silvery leaves that comes back from its roots and needs more than one visit; the New Mexico Russian olive removal guide explains why. Sound Familiar?

  • Piñon and juniper grown in so close that their branches reach the roofline
  • A lot on a canyon rim where nobody will say whether a machine can work it
  • Russian olive filling the arroyo or the old windbreak at the back of the property
  • Cut branches stacked by the shed with nowhere to burn them

Cut Brush Delivers

  • The stand thinned out, with the trees you want kept flagged and left standing
  • Access talked through on the call and any slope limit written into the quote
  • The Russian olive cut and ground, with the return visits on their own lines
  • Everything ground to chips on site, so there is no pile to haul or burn

Why Northern New Mexico Property Owners Choose Cut Brush

Thinning around a house comes down to which piñon and juniper stay, how much room ends up between their crowns and how far from the walls the work reaches, all settled before the machine is unloaded.

  • No pile to burn. In Los Alamos County the fire department's open burning permit covers property in La Senda and Pajarito Acres only. Mulched wood is left on the ground as chips.
  • Prices posted before you call. Each type of job is priced in its own per-acre band on the Los Alamos pricing page.
  • A scope in writing. The trees that stay, the spacing and the finish go into the quote, and any Russian olive return visit gets a line of its own.
  • What the price covers. Brush, small trees and stumps ground into mulch on site, stumps level with the ground, nothing hauled off. Stump removal below grade and cutting and hauling very large trees are discussed and priced in the quote; grading is your builder's.

What to Know Before Clearing Land Around Los Alamos

Defensible space starts at the walls. In Los Alamos County, keep tree branches at least 10 feet from other trees and use gravel, pavers or other noncombustible material in the first five feet around the home. In Santa Fe County, the Fire Department's Defensible Space Program, set under Ordinance 2023-06 and the 2021 International Wildland Urban Interface Code, lets owners in wildland urban interface areas ask for a letter on how far the property complies. The county issues it; our crew thins to the scope you choose.

Mesas and canyon rims set the access. Los Alamos sits on the Pajarito Plateau, which runoff from the mountains has cut into long, thin mesas separated by canyons. A rim lot can have room for the machine on top and none on the slope below it. Any slope our machine cannot work safely stays out of the scope, and you hear that before the job is booked.

Burning and stormwater have their own rules. Open burning in Los Alamos County needs the fire department's permit, which covers only La Senda and Pajarito Acres. Clearing that disturbs an acre or more falls under EPA's construction stormwater permit. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Los Alamos Land Clearing FAQ

Whether one applies depends on the acreage and the place, and two rules come up most. Clearing that disturbs an acre or more needs coverage under EPA's construction stormwater permit, since New Mexico has no state program. Burning is narrow: the Los Alamos County open burning permit covers only La Senda and Pajarito Acres. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.
Most work falls between $1,500 and $4,500 an acre, and thinning piñon and juniper around a house sits in the $1,500 to $2,500 band. Small jobs start at a minimum charge of about $1,500; that is the starting point, not a fee on top of the acre rate. The bands are on the Los Alamos pricing page, and the Los Alamos forestry mulching cost guide compares thinning a house's surroundings with clearing a whole acre.
That letter comes from the Santa Fe County Fire Department, which decides how far a property complies, and we have no say in it. If the letter matters to you, ask the county what it looks for before any work starts, then bring us that list. Our crew thins to the scope you choose, and the quote writes it down.
Yes, in most cases. It sprouts from the root crown and sends up suckers, and cutting takes the top while doing little to the roots. Mulching opens the thicket; return visits, with a licensed applicator's stump treatment if you want one, complete the work. Our New Mexico Russian olive removal guide explains the return visits.
Three counties. In Los Alamos County: Los Alamos and White Rock. In Santa Fe County: El Rancho, El Valle de Arroyo Seco, Cuartelez, Las Campanas, Tres Arroyos, Tano Road, Chimayo, Agua Fria, Santa Fe and La Cienega. In Rio Arriba County: La Mesilla, Española, La Villita, Los Luceros and Dixon.
