Land Clearing Cost in Los Alamos, NM

Around Los Alamos and down into Santa Fe and Rio Arriba counties, the job most owners price is a thinning, not a bare-ground clear: piñon and juniper grown in around a house on Tano Road or outside Chimayo, where the aim is fewer trees with more room between them. Land clearing at Los Alamos runs $1,500 to $4,500 an acre, and small jobs begin at a minimum charge of about $1,500. That work has its own band, below a full clear. How far from the house it runs, how crowded the stand is, canyon slopes and Russian olive along a drainage move a job inside its band. A full clear for a pasture, a barn or a new house uses the higher bands below.

The quote is one written figure for the finish we agree, with each return trip for Russian olive sprouts on a separate line you can accept or drop. That price is for forestry mulching: brush, small trees and stumps ground into mulch on site, stumps flush with the ground, nothing hauled off. Taking stumps out below grade, or felling and hauling very large trees, is discussed and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not in our price; we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. Herbicide, if a plan needs it, is a licensed applicator's work.

Los Alamos Rates by Type of Work

Forestry Mulching

$1,500 – $4,000 / acre

Piñon, juniper, brush and saplings ground to chips by one tracked machine. Scattered trees on a level bench price near $1,500 an acre; a closed stand on a slope toward a canyon rim prices toward $4,000.

Piñon-Juniper Thinning & Understory

$1,500 – $2,500 / acre

Some of the piñon and juniper taken out around a house so the crowns that stay have room, plus brush and Russian olive along a drainage or windbreak. The keepers and their spacing are agreed in writing first.

Land Clearing

$1,500 – $4,500 / acre

A whole parcel taken to the finish named in your quote, such as a pasture won back from juniper or a site for a barn. Light growth sits low in the band; a dense stand cleared to the soil sits high. Stumps end level with the ground, and digging them out below grade is its own line.

Lot & Homesite Prep

$1,500 – $4,500 / acre equivalent

Room for the house, a drive and a power and water corridor cleared on a wooded lot, with keeper trees marked first. We stop at the surface; the pad and the grading belong to your builder.

A minimum charge of about $1,500 is where small jobs start. Bringing the mulcher up the hill to space out a dozen junipers beside one house in White Rock means the same haul and setup as a full day of work, so a job that small is billed at the minimum and nothing is added on; past that, the acre bands set the price. Taking in the drive edges and the far corner on the same trip makes the most of it.

What Moves a Los Alamos Quote

How far from the house you thin

In Los Alamos County, branches should be kept at least 10 feet from other trees and noncombustible ground in the first five feet of the home. How far out you take that spacing sets the acreage before any rate applies: a ring around the house is a small job, the whole lot is a larger one.

How many trees come out

Thinning a stand so the crowns stand apart takes more out of a crowded lot than an open one. A few scattered junipers are quick; a stand where piñon and juniper touch across the whole lot means more stems through the machine for the same area.

Mesa tops and canyon rims

Long, thin mesas separated by canyons make up the plateau Los Alamos sits on. Level ground on top goes faster than a rim or a side slope, and any slope our machine cannot work safely is left out of the scope, which you hear about before work is booked.

Russian olive along drainages

Russian olive sprouts from the root crown after cutting, so a first pass along a drainage or windbreak needs follow-up. The first pass uses the bands above; return visits have their own quoted lines so you can see the full plan.

The route in for the trailer

A firm drive with room to turn puts the machine next to the work. A narrow lane, a tight switchback or patches spread across a large parcel take time from mulching. The call about your quote covers how a truck and trailer reach the ground.

Los Alamos Pricing Questions

Most jobs run $1,500 to $4,500 an acre. Thinning piñon and juniper around a house falls in the $1,500 to $2,500 band, while a dense stand mulched to the soil on a slope sits near the top of the mulching band, but any one acre can land anywhere in its band, set by the trees on it and the ground under them. The $1,500 minimum is the starting point for small jobs, not what a typical acre costs.
In most cases, yes, per acre. A thinning leaves most of the trees and takes out the crowding, so it prices in the lower thinning band, while a full clear runs up to $4,500 an acre. The Los Alamos forestry mulching cost guide puts the two side by side and shows how to size a thinning before you call.
The acre rate is the same. A Russian olive thicket along a drainage prices in the $1,500 to $2,500 band, or as forestry mulching where the trunks are big and dense. What adds cost is the follow-up, since the tree sprouts back from its roots. Our New Mexico Russian olive removal guide sets out the visits.
No. The Santa Fe County Fire Department issues that letter and decides how far a property complies. If you want one, ask the county what it looks for first and give us that scope. Burn and stormwater rules are summarized on the Los Alamos land clearing page.
