Land Clearing
Whole-parcel work, with the ending written down rather than assumed. Three questions settle what clearing means on a property: which stems go and which stay, whether stumps are cut flush or lifted out of the soil, and whether the material stays on the land or leaves on a truck. Answer those three and two quotes that looked nothing alike usually turn out to be describing different jobs.
The valley adds a fourth question drier country can skip: when. Ground that carries a machine cleanly on frost will not carry it during a thaw, and opening a large area of bare soil just before a valley spring creates a problem that has nothing to do with brush.
Right for turning woods back into pasture, opening acreage for a barn or a drive, or taking a grown-over parcel back to field. Wrong when the canopy is staying and only the floor needs opening, which is understory work at a lower price. Because land disturbance is permitted town by town here, the permit guide is worth reading first.
Forestry Mulching
One tracked carrier with a rotary head, working standing brush and small trees on the spot. Nothing is pushed into a heap, nothing is loaded, nothing leaves the property. The head reduces what it takes to chip and spreads it across the soil surface, with stumps cut flush instead of dug out, so the root network stays where it is.
That finish suits New York for a reason that is regulatory as much as agronomic. Burning is closed statewide from 16 March through 14 May and, outside that window, on-site brush burning is allowed only in towns under 20,000 residents and only for brush under 6 inches across and 8 feet long. For most valley owners there is no legal fire at any time of year, so the real choice is chip on the ground or material on a truck.
Right for understory beneath timber you are keeping, for regrowth on land you want opened rather than rebuilt, and for parcels where hauling would cost more than the clearing. Wrong when you need bare soil to plant into, when the stems are heavier than a head can take, or when stone in the working layer stops a head being brought low enough to do what you pictured.
Brush, Regrowth & Understory Clearing
Our lightest scope and the one most valley properties genuinely need. It covers the floor beneath a stand you are keeping, a field margin that has crept in for a decade, a hedgerow swallowing a stone wall, and old pasture going over to barberry, multiflora rose and bittersweet. The keeper trees are untouched and the ground underneath goes back to being walkable. Because the material is sized for the head this is efficient work, and two or three small scopes bundled into one visit price better than the same scopes booked apart.
The limit worth saying out loud is that it is not permanent. Cutting an understory lets light onto the floor, which is usually the point, and the invasive shrubs here answer light quickly. Research on controlling barberry found the benefit lasting as long as six years before numbers rebuilt, with a return pass suggested about every five. We would rather say so at the walk-through than let you discover it in year six.
Lot & Homesite Prep
Clearing aimed at something being built: a house or shop envelope, the corridor a drive will occupy, and the lines a well, septic field or power run needs. The clearing itself is the same work. What changes is that the finish has to suit whoever arrives next, so the scope names where material goes, where the cut and fill sit, and what state the ground is handed over in.
The valley wrinkle is water, twice over. On the river side a clay-rich subsoil sheds slowly; up toward the Catskill front a firm pan perches water above it. Either way, where water leaves the corridor once the trees are gone is a question to answer on paper before it answers itself in April.
One boundary to be plain about: cleared ground is not finished ground. Cutting stumps flush leaves roots in the soil, which helps a wet slope and does nothing for a footing, so grading and compaction are separate work and priced that way. At an acre of disturbance the state permit applies, and many towns sit far below that figure, so on a homesite the paperwork usually sets the programme.

Brush pulled off the line so it can be walked and mended. Many boundaries here are dry stone rather than posts, and a wall vanishes under bittersweet and sumac long before it falls down.

Mowing a grown-in field around Goshen, Warwick or Liberty while the stems are small enough for a mower. Where stone in the sod or stem size rules a mower out, a mulching head takes over.
Invasive Species Removal
Japanese barberry through the woodland floor, Oriental bittersweet up the hedgerows, multiflora rose in old pasture, knotweed along the creeks and tree-of-heaven on cut banks. Cutting takes the top and leaves the root, so a return pass belongs in the plan.
Trail Cutting
Walking, riding and sledding trails, plus access to a back woodlot. On fragipan ground water perches above the pan rather than soaking away, so a line cut along the contour lasts and one run downhill turns into a channel.
Commercial Clearing
Pads, outparcels, laydown ground and access corridors. Because the land disturbance threshold is municipal, the start date is set by whichever town or village holds the parcel.
Property Maintenance
A repeat pass on ground you have decided to keep open. Valley edges close back fast, and barberry rebuilds within a handful of years, which is why the research suggests returning about every five.
Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction
Opening the brush and leaf litter between a house, barn or paddock and the treeline. The USDA Forest Service reports that barberry understories harbor greatly enhanced levels of blacklegged ticks, so this one is rarely bought for looks.
Defensible Space Clearing
Thinning brush and ladder fuels back from a structure on a wooded parcel. New York closes brush burning from mid March to mid May precisely because that is when wildfire risk peaks, and a house standing in unbroken brush is exposed in that window.
Selective View Clearing
The job this landscape genuinely offers. Toward the Shawangunk ridge, the Catskill front or the river, the stems blocking a view come out while the trees framing it are marked and left. Work near water is checked against the rules first.
Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing
Plots, lanes and access on hunting land through Sullivan and western Orange counties. On stony till the limit is how shallow the pass has to be, so lanes go where the soil is deepest rather than where a map looks neatest.
