What Cut Brush Does Around LaFollette

Campbell County mixes mountain slopes, coal-era benches, valley farms and Norris Lake shoreline inside a short drive of LaFollette. Cut Brush offers four kinds of work on that ground: grinding growth in place, clearing whole parcels to a written finish, pulling shrubs and vine out from under trees worth keeping, and opening sloped or lakeside lots for a house. Below, each method is explained along with where it falls short and the smaller jobs it handles.

Prices sit on the LaFollette pricing guide, and the permit, shoreline and terrain picture is on the LaFollette land clearing page. Describe the parcel through our quote form and we will confirm whether we can take it before any figure is given.

Forestry Mulching

A tracked carrier drives a spinning drum fitted with hardened teeth into standing brush, vine and young trees and leaves them as chips on the spot. Stems up to about eight inches go straight through the head; larger trees are dropped first and their tops ground where they fall. There is no pile to burn and nothing to truck away.

The result is open, walkable ground under a chip layer, with stumps cut level with the soil and their roots left in place to hold a slope. On a mountainside above LaFollette that matters, because bare soil on a grade moves in the first hard rain. It also sidesteps Tennessee's burn permit season and the separate burn rules LaFollette and several nearby towns keep.

Where it is the wrong tool: a builder who needs clean dirt will have to deal with the chips, and autumn olive or kudzu roots under the surface survive the head and come back without a treatment.

Land Clearing

A full clearing job is written backwards from the finish. Before the quote goes out you decide whether stumps are pulled or left at grade, whether wood is ground on site or hauled, and whether the surface is shaped afterwards. One Campbell County tract can mix all three: mulched edges, large timber felled and ground, and a building area taken to soil.

This is the scope for old farms coming back into use, mountain land being split into homesites, and commercial ground near Jacksboro or Caryville. A single overgrown hedgerow does not need it; understory work is cheaper. The hours come from slope, rock, trunk size, stump removal and how far the machine has to travel from the road.

Inside the city, LaFollette's posted permit form asks for a grading permit before any land disturbing activity and lists a 25-foot stream buffer; confirm both with the city codes office. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Brush, Autumn Olive & Kudzu Clearing

Virginia Tech's Powell River Project guidelines describe unmanaged mine land as fescue and sericea lespedeza with autumn olive and black locust invading within about five years. Coal shaped this county for generations, and Indian Mountain at Jellico was once a mine. Kudzu works the road cuts and woods edges, rooting wherever its runners touch the ground.

The mulching head cuts through a shrub thicket and the vine-wrapped saplings beneath kudzu while working between the trees you want left. Rotary mowers bog down in autumn olive more than a couple of years old. When the job is done you can see through the stand and walk it, and the good hardwoods are still standing.

Plan on regrowth. The same guidelines say cutting or chipping without spraying lets stems resprout, and kudzu stores energy in tubers at its root crown, so book a treatment provider for the follow-up. If the big trees should go too, that is land clearing; knee-high soft growth is cheaper to mow.

Lot & Homesite Preparation

Getting a wooded lot ready for a house normally covers four pieces in one quote: the footprint and yard, a drive from the road, runs for power, water and septic, and space for the builder to park and stage. On a mountain or lakeside lot the driveway grade usually decides where everything else can go. Trees you want kept are flagged first, with their roots left alone.

You choose the finish up front: chips on a lot that will sit for a season, or bare soil for the excavator. Stump pulling, pad work and grading are each priced separately. If the lot faces Norris Lake across TVA shoreland, the 50-foot shoreline management zone and the 20-foot access corridor limit set what can be cut near the water, and TVA has to approve that part in writing.

A mulched lot is not a building pad. If a bid says otherwise, ask for that in writing.

Smaller Jobs Done With the Same Equipment

Landowners across Campbell, Anderson, Union and Claiborne counties often ask for these by name; each one uses one or more of the four methods above.

Fence Line Clearing

Powell's Valley farms lose their wire to briar, locust and shrubs a few feet at a time. Grinding the row back lets you see the posts and stretch new strands.

Brush Hogging

Hayfields and pasture with a season or two of soft growth are often cheaper to bush hog with a tractor than to mulch, and the quote says so when that is the case.

Invasive Species Removal

Around LaFollette that usually means autumn olive and lespedeza on old mine benches and kudzu on road cuts and woods margins. The machine opens the ground; a herbicide follow-up from a treatment provider keeps it open.

Trail Cutting

ATV loops, walking paths and access lanes across mountain land, laid along the contour so heavy rain runs off rather than down the middle of the trail.

Commercial Clearing

Pads and multi-lot sites inside LaFollette or Jacksboro, planned around any grading permit the LaFollette city form calls for and, from one acre, state construction stormwater coverage.

Property Maintenance

A planned return pass a season or two later. Autumn olive and kudzu both regrow from what is left in the soil, so a single visit seldom holds.

Tick & Snake Habitat Reduction

Tall brush and vine tight against a cabin, barn or shed gives ticks, snakes and rodents cover. Clearing a wide strip around buildings takes that cover away.

Defensible Space

Thinning brush and small trees between a wooded mountainside and the house, so the fuel near the walls is lighter and the margin is simpler to keep up.

Selective View Clearing

Opening a line of sight to Norris Lake or down a valley. On TVA shoreland that work needs TVA approval first; on your own ground, keeper trees are flagged before cutting.

Food Plot & Shooting Lane Clearing

Plots, lanes and stand trails on Campbell and Claiborne County hunting ground, with bedding cover left where you want the deer to stay.

Horse Pasture & Paddock Reclamation

Paddocks taken over by briar and shrubs, ground flat with no brush pile to fence around. Old wire hidden in the growth gets looked for before the machine goes in.

HOA Compliance & Vacant Lot Clearing

A grown-over lot with a notice or a deadline, cleared to schedule, with the city site-plan threshold of a tenth of an acre checked first.

Sell-Ready Lot Cleanup

Opening a parcel before it is listed, so buyers can walk the slope, see the building spot and judge the lake or mountain view for themselves.

Not Sure Which Method You Need?

Choosing the method is our job. Tell us where the land is, about how many acres, how steep it is, whether it was ever mined or fronts the lake, and what you want to do with it. If we can take the job, the written quote names the method, the finish and a single price. The four ranges are on the LaFollette pricing guide.
