Greg did a fantastic job with our land that was overgrown with vines, brush and trees. It took about 1 1/2 days of constant work with the machine to get this 0.6 acres under control. Greg was here at 8am sharp, just as promised. Very professional and reliable. 100% satisfied customer! I highly recommend Cut Brush for land clearing.

Land Clearing & Forestry Mulching Across Pella and South-Central Iowa

Pella and Knoxville face each other across Lake Red Rock in Marion County, and Cut Brush clears land from both out across six counties, from Mitchellville and Colfax to Newton, Grinnell, Oskaloosa and Albia. Within 15 miles of Pella roughly two acres in three are farmland and about a quarter is forest, shrub or pasture. That mix sets the work: fence rows between fields, pasture edges going back to brush, and timber along the lake and its creeks.

The usual tool is forestry mulching: our crew grinds brush, autumn olive and small trees into chips where they grew, so there is no pile to burn and the soil stays covered. We also take on land clearing, autumn olive and fence row clearing and lot and homesite prep.

Sound Familiar?

  • A fence row that has grown into a wall of silver-backed shrubs
  • Pasture losing a little more ground to brush at every edge
  • An acreage above the lake you cannot walk to the back of
  • Quotes that price each tree when the job is hundreds of stems

Cut Brush Delivers

  • The fence row cut back to the wire, with the posts in sight again
  • Brush ground in place so the grass has room to return
  • Keeper trees flagged first and everything else mulched to the ground
  • One per-acre price for the area, with return visits listed apart

Why Marion County Landowners Choose Cut Brush

Clearing here is rarely one big block: a fence row on one side of a farm, a pasture corner on another, a strip of timber above the lake. The price and the method have to suit that.

  • Priced by the acre, not the tree. A grown-in fence row holds hundreds of autumn olive stems, and counting trunks makes no sense there. The Pella pricing page publishes a per-acre band for each kind of work.
  • No burn pile. Iowa lets brush from clearing burn only a quarter mile or more from any home other than the landowner's or tenant's. Brush ground in place never needs that distance or a burn day.
  • Return visits in writing. Autumn olive comes back from stumps and seed, so the quote names each follow-up trip and its price before the machine is unloaded.
  • What the price includes. Forestry mulching grinds brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site, leaves stumps flush with the ground and hauls nothing away. Full stump removal below grade and cutting and hauling very large trees are discussed and priced in the quote; grading and build pads are not part of our price.

Comparing bids? The Pella forestry mulching cost guide sets per-tree quotes beside per-acre ones, the Iowa autumn olive removal guide covers the visits the shrub needs, and the Iowa land clearing cost guide covers Iowa as a whole, including stormwater coverage and timber held as forest reserve.

What to Know Before Clearing Land Around Pella

Lake Red Rock sets the edges. Lake Red Rock lies between Pella and Knoxville, and with the land around it covers more than 50,000 acres, the largest single expanse of public land in Iowa, from sandy shoreline to wooded rocky bluffs. Heavy rain can triple the lake's size. Near the shore, settle where your line meets public ground before any clearing, and expect low ground to set the timing.

Old pasture fills with autumn olive. At Rock Creek Wildlife Area in Jasper County, honeysuckle and autumn olive spread thickly across hills that were most likely once pasture, and keeping them back takes constant work. Our Iowa autumn olive removal guide explains when to cut and how many visits to plan.

Permits and who issues them. Inside Pella, the City's Planning and Zoning Department at City Hall, 825 Broadway Street, handles zoning and building permits. Marion County Zoning in Knoxville covers only the unincorporated land, and its flood plain permit applies to filling, grading and excavation in a mapped flood plain. Construction that disturbs an acre or more needs Iowa DNR General Permit No. 2 coverage before work starts. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.

Pella Land Clearing FAQ

That turns on where the land sits and what the project involves. Inside Pella, ask the City's Planning and Zoning Department at City Hall. Outside the cities, Marion County Zoning in Knoxville handles the unincorporated land, including flood plain permits for filling, grading or excavation. Disturbing an acre or more for construction needs Iowa DNR General Permit No. 2 coverage first. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.
Most work runs $1,500 to $4,500 an acre. Cutting autumn olive back off a fence row or pasture edge is the $1,500 to $2,500 band; a dense stand of shrubs and young trees ground to the soil falls in the $1,500 to $4,000 mulching band. Small jobs carry a minimum charge of about $1,500, which is where they start, not a fee added on top. The bands are on the Pella pricing page, and the Pella forestry mulching cost guide explains why a per-tree quote and a per-acre quote are hard to compare.
Expect it to, from the stumps and from seed birds have already spread. Cutting with prompt stump treatment, then pulling new seedlings each spring, is what holds the ground. Our crew does the cutting and the return visits; any stump treatment is a licensed applicator's work. The Iowa autumn olive removal guide lays out the visits.
Where your line runs. Lake Red Rock and its surrounding land make up the largest single expanse of public land in Iowa, most of it federal ground managed by the Corps of Engineers, so a parcel near the shore can sit right against it. Settle the boundary before clearing near the water. The quote covers your side of the line only.
Six counties. In Marion County: Pella, Knoxville, Pleasantville and Melcher-Dallas. In Jasper County: Monroe, Newton, Prairie City and Colfax. New Sharon and Oskaloosa in Mahaska County, Montezuma and Grinnell in Poweshiek County, Albia in Monroe County and Mitchellville in Polk County.
