Forestry Mulching Cost in Lubbock, TX (2026)

Tracked forestry mulcher grinding young trees and brush into a layer of chips

Forestry mulching around Lubbock costs $1,500 to $4,000 per acre, and small jobs start at our $1,500 project minimum. Where an acre lands in that band depends less on the height of the trees than on how many mesquite trunks stand on it: a pasture with a young tree every few yards sits near the bottom, a draw choked with old, multi-stemmed mesquite near the top.

What an Acre of Mesquite Costs

The USDA Forest Service describes the Llano Estacado as shortgrass prairie with patches of honey mesquite. On most tracts around Lubbock the brush is a scatter of trees on grass or a band along a draw, so stem count is the measure that matters.

What stands on the acreUsual rowPer acre
Young mesquite and brush scattered through pastureMesquite and pasture brush clearing$1,500 – $2,500
Young and mature trees mixed, with open grass betweenForestry mulching$2,000 – $3,000
Old, multi-stemmed mesquite in a closed thicketForestry mulching$3,000 – $4,000
A whole tract cleared for a building siteLand clearing$1,500 – $4,500

These rows apply the published bands; the full set is on our Lubbock pricing guide. The project minimum is a minimum charge, not a fee added on top, and it is where small jobs start: half an acre of scattered mesquite at $1,500 an acre works out to $750, so it is quoted at $1,500.

Per Acre, Per Hour or Per Day?

Some clearing around Lubbock is sold by the hour or the day. Cut Brush gives one written price for the job, so a slow stretch of thick stems costs you nothing extra.

To set a time-based quote beside ours, work it through in three steps:

  1. Ask how many hours or days the bidder expects for your ground, and multiply by the rate to get a job total.
  2. Divide that total by your acres.
  3. Compare the result with a per-acre figure, and check that both quotes describe the same finish.

The second step is where day rates swing: the same rate is a bargain on scattered pasture mesquite and expensive in a thicket, where the machine may clear a fraction of an acre. Whoever you hire, get the finish in writing: mulched in place, stumps flush, crowns left in or taken out, nothing hauled.

What Sets the Pace in Mesquite

No bidder can fairly name acres a day for mesquite before seeing the stems. Three things decide how fast your ground goes.

Stems per acre. Every trunk is a separate bite for the mulching head. A crown that was cut or burned years ago comes back with several stems, and Texas A&M AgriLife’s Brush Busters guide notes that multi-stemmed mesquite is much harder to control than a younger or undisturbed tree.

Trunk size. Trunks up to about eight inches feed straight into the head. Bigger mesquite has to be felled before its top is ground, which slows the pace sharply.

Getting to the brush. A gate too narrow for the trailer, crop rows or a pivot track to cross, or a playa basin still holding water after a storm adds time before any cutting starts.

One Pass, Crown Removal or a Follow-Up

A mulching pass cuts each tree at the surface. Texas A&M AgriLife’s West Texas Rangelands team explains that grubbing works because it removes the part of the root system where new shoots develop, and that any of that bud zone left behind can resprout. That leaves three plans, each with its own price shape:

  • One mulching pass. The lowest first bill. The pasture opens at once, and the crowns send up sprouts within a season or two.
  • Mulching plus crown removal. Taking the crowns out below grade is full stump removal, which we discuss and price in the quote. It costs more now and less later. AgriLife adds that favorable soil moisture lets the crown come out more completely, so a dry spell can move the start date.
  • Mulching plus a licensed applicator. The Brush Busters guide says to allow two full growing seasons after a mechanical top kill before its leaf spray method. That treatment is herbicide work, quoted separately by a licensed applicator; Cut Brush does not price it.

A return pass on resprouts usually falls in our mesquite and pasture brush row at $1,500 to $2,500 an acre. Our Lubbock mesquite removal guide walks through the order of visits.

Burning, Stormwater and What the Price Includes

Mulching leaves no pile. Texas allows land clearing growth to be burned on the property only outside city limits and under state distance, daylight and wind conditions, and Lubbock County has ordered burn bans in dry spells, including a 30-day ban in March 2025. A cut-and-pile job can sit until a legal burn day comes; a mulched one is finished when the machine leaves.

Clearing an acre or more brings in city or county stormwater paperwork, which can move a start date but not our rate.

Our mulching price grinds brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site, leaves the stumps flush with the ground and hauls nothing away. Full stump removal below grade and cut-and-haul of very large trees are discussed and priced in the quote. Grading and build pads are not part of our price: we clear to the ground so a builder can grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to clear an acre of mesquite near Lubbock?

Mulching runs $1,500 to $4,000 an acre, depending on how many trunks stand on it and how big they are. Taking the crowns out below grade is priced in the quote on top of that.

How long does it take to mulch an acre of mesquite?

It depends on stems per acre, trunk size and access, so there is no fixed figure: scattered pasture mesquite goes far faster than an old, multi-stemmed thicket. That is why we price the job, not the hours.

Is a day rate cheaper than a per-acre price?

Only on ground where a day covers a lot of acres. Multiply the day rate by the days expected, divide by your acres, and compare that with a per-acre figure for the same finish.
