What to Know Before Clearing Land Around Sweet Home
Forestland comes with its own paperwork. Clearing forestland for another use is an
operation under Oregon's forest rules, and the State Forester must be notified at least 15 days
before it starts. In fire season the Oregon Department of Forestry also issues permits to use power driven
machinery; both are filed online, and ODF's Sweet Home Unit office is on US 20. Other state
and local rules can apply to the new use, so build the lead time into your start date.
The burn ring and the rainy half of the year. Oregon rule OAR 340-264-0110 makes the
ground within three miles of Sweet Home, Lebanon, Albany and five other Linn County cities a special
burning control area, where clearing debris needs a DEQ letter permit. At one acre or more of disturbed
soil, DEQ's 1200-C stormwater permit applies. Around Sweet Home more than 7 inches of rain falls a month from November through January and under an inch in July, so machine work fits the
dry months. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes
the determination.
Broom follows the saw. Scotch broom is the most extensive forest weed in Oregon: it moves into disturbed sites and forestland and can smother young planted trees. On cutover or replanted ground near Sweet Home, plan for
seedlings after the first clearing. Our
