Forestry Mulching Cost in Nephi, UT (2026)
Cut Brush Team · October 17, 2026 · 5 min read
Forestry mulching around Nephi costs $1,500 to $4,000 an acre, and lighter work on young cedars or oak brush runs $1,500 to $2,500 an acre. What decides your total over the next few years is less the first figure than what is growing on the lot. Juniper that is ground out does not sprout back. Gambel oak does, so an acre of oak brush carries a second, lighter visit that an acre of juniper does not.
At these rates the machine grinds brush, small trees and stumps into mulch on site, stumps finish flush with the ground, and nothing is hauled away. Full stump removal below grade, and cutting and hauling very large trees, are discussed and priced in your quote. Grading is not part of our price: we clear to the ground so a builder can grade. Small jobs start at a minimum charge of about $1,500, billed in place of an acre rate on work too small to reach it, never as a fee on top.
Juniper Stays Down, Oak Comes Back
Utah juniper, the cedar on the benches and flats, spreads only by seed. It reproduces only by seed, and after a fire it returns from seed left on the site or carried in, not from sprouts. A juniper ground to its base is gone. What can come back is a seedling the machine missed or seed already in the soil.
Gambel oak is the opposite. The oak depends more on sprouting than on seed, and its large underground root mass sprouts rapidly and thickly once the top is removed. Mulching takes the stems; the root mass sends up a crop of new shoots.
On the bench east of town the two grow together. Three miles east of Nephi, a pinyon-juniper stand grows over a dense Gambel oak understory left alone for twenty years or more. A lot nearby with the same mix is two purchases: a one-time job on the juniper and a follow-up on the oak.
Pricing the Oak Return Cut
Over the first couple of years, the two kinds of ground usually price like this.
| What is on the lot | First pass | What follows |
|---|---|---|
| Young cedars scattered through sagebrush | $1,500 – $2,500 / acre | A walk for missed seedlings; usually no paid visit |
| A closed juniper stand | $1,500 – $4,000 / acre | The same seedling check |
| Juniper over thick Gambel oak | $1,500 – $4,000 / acre | A return cut on oak sprouts, $1,500 – $2,500 / acre |
| Oak brush alone under trees you keep | $1,500 – $2,500 / acre | A return cut on the sprouts |
Every figure in the table is one of the bands on the Nephi pricing page; the rows show where each kind of ground tends to sit, not separate prices. A given acre can land anywhere in its band.
The return cut is lighter work than the first pass: soft shoots instead of standing brush. We quote it as its own line, timed for a season or two after the first visit, so you can take it, push it back or skip it. Skip it and the shoots grow back into a thicket, so if the oak is on a slope you want kept open, budget for the second visit from the start.
A Few Big Cedars or a Closed Stand
We price by the area worked and what stands on it, so a handful of big cedars on an otherwise open lot is a small job, and if it prices below the minimum by the acre it is charged the minimum of about $1,500 instead.
The question to settle before the quote is which of those trees you want kept. Big old junipers are slow-growing trees: their trunks grow about a twentieth of an inch a year. A few left standing cost less than grinding them. If you want a very large tree cut and hauled off the property rather than ground in place, that is discussed and priced in the quote.
Bench Slopes and Canyon Soil
Soils around Salt Creek Canyon are highly erodible, and bench ground near Nephi can be steep.
A private bench lot nearby can face similar ground. Sloped ground usually sits higher in its band than the same growth on the flat, because the machine works more carefully across it. If a face is too steep or too loose for the mulcher, the quote leaves it out or names another way to handle it. Mulching leaves chips on the soil and roots in it, where a scraped slope would be bare.
Disturbing an acre or more of soil brings in Utah’s construction storm water coverage, and building permits go through Nephi City or Juab County. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.
Forestry Mulching Is Not Bed Mulch
Forestry mulching is not landscape mulch, the bark bought and spread in a flower bed. A tracked machine grinds the trees and brush standing on your land, and the mulch it leaves is your old juniper and oak. It is priced by the acre because you are paying for the clearing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to treat juniper stumps after mulching?
No. Utah juniper does not grow back from its stump, so there is nothing to treat. Walk the ground in a year or two for seedlings, which are quick to pull or cut while small.
When should the oak return cut happen?
Usually a season or two after the first pass, once the sprouts are up but still soft. The quote names the timing so you can plan for it.
Does a sloped lot always cost more?
Not always. A gentle grade with light growth can still price low in its band. Slope pushes the price up when it slows the machine, and ground too steep for it is left out of the quote.
