What to Know Before Clearing Land Around Nephi
Juniper over oak on the east bench. Three miles east of Nephi, on the Mona Benches, Santaquin and Spencer Fork wildlife areas, pinyon-juniper stands over a dense Gambel oak understory left untouched for twenty years or more. A bench lot
nearby can hold the same mix. The juniper reproduces only from seed, so once it is ground out it does
not return from the stump; the oak sprouts from its roots and needs a second cut.
Slope and loose soil. Soils around Salt Creek Canyon erode easily. A private bench lot nearby can sit on similar ground, so the grade is checked before the quote.
Offices, permits and power lines. Nephi City issues building and fence permits and
contracts with Juab County for planning; the county's Planning and Zoning office is at 160 N Main
Street, Office 117. Neither lists a clearing permit. Nephi City Power keeps trees 10 feet from its lines
and asks owners not to trim near them, so a tree close to a line is the city's call first. Disturbing
an acre or more brings in Utah DEQ's storm water coverage. Requirements vary by parcel, scope and
jurisdiction, and the governing authority makes the determination.
