The Metro Is Growing at Its Edges

All four counties in the Orlando metro added residents in 2025, but the growth moved outward: Osceola and Lake were again among the state's fastest-growing counties while Orange and Seminole fell below the national rate, with both running net outflows to their neighbors. Osceola alone has grown 70% over twenty years and is projected to pass 700,000 residents by 2050. Sunbridge spans 27,000 acres across Orange and Osceola with nearly 30,000 homes planned, Horizon West carries over 10,000 approved homes across five villages, and roughly $5 billion of road work is underway around them.

Three Things That Decide an Orlando Clearing Job

The four-inch line. Orange County requires a permit to remove any tree larger than four inches in diameter at chest height on private property. That is a low threshold, and it means the tree survey is not a formality here, it is the first real step. Fees run $25 per acre residential and $50 per acre commercial, specimen trees must be preserved where reasonable options exist, and approved specimen removals replace at two to one on caliper.

You cannot burn your way out of it. Burning yard waste and tree-cutting debris on residential property is prohibited here without an air curtain incinerator or a Florida Forest Service authorization, and the county's own Air Quality Management section will not authorize open burning of that material. Whatever comes down has to be processed or hauled, which changes the economics of every clearing quote in this county.

Which trees are actually the problem. Chinese tallow reached almost every county in Florida after arriving as an 18th-century ornamental, and camphor has been spreading since 1875. Neither responds to simple cutting: tallow needs the fresh stump treated and seedlings pulled before they seed, camphor needs herbicide on trees and stumps. Removing them properly is different work from clearing brush, and it is worth pricing as such.

Probably, and the threshold is lower than most people expect. Orange County requires a permit to remove a tree larger than four inches in diameter at chest height on private property, with fees of $25 per acre for private residential removals and $50 per acre for commercial. Specimen trees carry stronger protection: reasonable efforts must be made to preserve them, and where removal is approved the replacement ratio is two to one, cumulative caliper installed against cumulative diameter removed. Applications identify every regulated tree by location, diameter, and common name. We measure and flag during the walk-through; the county makes the determination.
On residential property in Orange County, essentially no. Burning yard waste and tree-cutting debris is prohibited unless you use a permitted air curtain incinerator or obtain an open burning authorization from the Florida Forest Service first, and the county Air Quality Management section will not authorize open burning of that material. Florida Forest Service authorizations are requested after 4 p.m. the day before or on the day of the burn, through the Orlando District Field Unit, and only cover debris generated at the site. This is a large part of why mulching in place is the normal answer here.

Usually the invasives. Chinese tallow was introduced as an ornamental in the 18th century, grows to about 30 feet, and is found in almost every county in Florida. Camphor has been spreading since it was brought over for cultivation in 1875 and is easy to identify by the smell of a crushed leaf. Both need more than cutting: mature tallow is cut and the fresh stump treated, seedlings are pulled before they set seed, and camphor responds to herbicide on trees and stumps. Cut and walk away and you get a thicket back.
