Pine Level grew up around tobacco, and the land still shows it: long, flat fields cut by drainage ditches, with a farmhouse lot or a stand of pines between them. Many of those fields are no longer planted. Left alone, they fill with loblolly pine, sweetgum and briars within a few seasons, and the ditches vanish under brush.
